Trevin Nelson
About
Hello! My name is Trevin Nelson have performed on the main stages of bluegrass and roots music festivals all across the United States and Canada, all while attending the prestigious, Berklee College of Music. I've formed a unique solo show and became one the founding members of Boston’s upcoming bluegrass/swing band, The Ruta Beggars, along with 4 other bands in the Boston Area. I've studied and performed with Lyle Lovett, Bruce Molsky, Tony Trischka, Matt Glaser, and Woody Mann to name a few. On top of studying music I've also studied in various somatic disciplines like Alexander Technique, Qi Gong, Raja Yoga, and am Reiki 2 certified. These areas also greatly contribute to my creative musical endeavors and overall lifestyle. I'm currently working full time with The Ruta Beggars and teaching in Boston!
Teaching Style
I've been teaching private and group lessons for the past 5 years and have found a deep love for passing on what I've learned to others. My teaching style has proven a fun and effective method for people learning and continuing to play banjo! I treat learning tunes as vehicle to develop musical knowledge and understanding. As a result, you develop the technique and repertoire that enables you to start jamming, writing, and performing!
Curriculum
Lessons are tailored towards each individual student at whatever level they're at!
My teaching style is heavily influenced by several of my mentors and experience. The first being Kenny Werner, founder of the Effortless Mastery Institute. A method that helps us get out of our own way so that learning can be a way of discovering the master musician within!
Secondly, my time at the Berklee College of Music. It was here that I got to study with many masters of American Roots Music as well as with some of the most renowned music educators in the world.
Thirdly, I pull from my professional performing experience. I've seen first hand what it takes to be comfortable on the stage or in a jam setting. I love teaching people in a way that helps them gain the confidence to perform or start a band with their friends.
Lastly, I have extensive training and certification in the somatic disciplines (Yoga, Qigong, Reiki level 2, etc.) In addition to musical studies I can guide you in a way that keeps you playing for years to come without pain or injury. All this combines to make for a fun and exciting way to learn how to play banjo! I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with you!
