About

Tyler "Tizo" Griffiths has been playing guitar for 12 years and has a passion for teaching. He grew up listening to Boys II Men, Michael Jackson, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and other legendary artists. In 2020, Tyler started the Tizo Guitar YouTube channel in order to share his love of R&B music and teach a wider audience the fundamentals of the genre. Influenced by the likes of players like Spank Alford, Kerry Marshall, Jairus Mozee and Isaiah Sharkey, Tyler is committed to helping others develop an authentic R&B guitar sound.

While R&B/Neo Soul guitar is his specialty, he dabbles in jazz, pop and funk playing as well. He believes every genre has skills and concepts that can be blended to create beautiful music. Above all, his number one goal is to inspire and teach the next generation of guitarists, equipping them to freely express themselves on their instrument.

Teaching Style

I started teaching free classes to groups of 2-3 students about 4 years after picking up the guitar. Took a break during college and then decided to get back to it by starting a YouTube channel (Tizo Guitar) and teaching private lessons during the pandemic.

My teaching style caters to the individual  goals of each student. I find that students are much more likely to retain the material if it's directly related to a song they enjoy or a certain skill they want to develop. In general, I like to start all my students off with the basics (guitar anatomy, musical alphabet, open chords, strum patterns) and then, once a solid foundation has been established, we get into more intermediate concepts (fretboard memorization, finger dexterity exercises, alternate picking, soloing). From there, the lesson material is based on short term and long term goals that we set based on what motivates the student.

Curriculum

My method is to first teach the fundamentals of guitar and music theory.  After that, I gradually build my students' knowledge and skills using material that motivates them individually. Every student is different so I try not to use a blanket approach for everything.
