Thank you for visiting! I'm a classically trained musician with experience playing a variety of instruments, music composition, arranging, and teaching. My music education began with brass instruments, including trumpet, euphonium and trombone, and I received honors including selection to the Texas All-State Band and scholarships to Texas Tech University and the University of Alaska. I also studied software development on my own, and I use this to develop applications that motivate and structure student practice. My applications for recorder students are used by thousands of students each year.
I believe that motivation is the key to musical development. Music students always find that there are times where they don't feel like they are progressing as much as they would like. This is especially true early on, and it can be very frustrating. When teaching, my goal is to find ways to keep learning fun for my students. Sometimes this means finding enjoyable music to play. Other times it might involve branching into some other areas of music, such as composition, recording, or even picking up a new instrument. The neat thing about music is that our growth in any single area ties into everything else. And when we keep things interesting for ourselves, we persevere long enough to succeed.
