About

About Me & My Teaching Approach

Professional Background

With over 30 years of professional performance and 25 years of teaching experience, my musical journey has spanned across Mexico, Canada, and Brazil. I am a multi-instrumentalist (Bass, Guitar, Piano, and Drums) and a composer currently preparing for an international performance contract with Disney. Throughout my career, I’ve had the honor of teaching at prestigious institutions like the Universidad Iberoamericana and working with diverse ensembles from Jazz and Bossa Nova to Contemporary Pop.

Teaching Philosophy: The Sound Art Workshop

I treat music education like a fine art atelier. My sessions are not just about rote memorization or dry theory; they are about crafting your unique sound. In my "Sound Art Workshop," we blend three fundamental pillars:

  1. Technical Mastery: Developing a solid foundation on your instrument (Bass, Guitar, or Vocals).

  2. Creative Improvisation: Learning to "speak" through your instrument with confidence and style.

  3. Digital Production: Integrating modern tools (DAWs) to help you understand the aesthetics of sound and record your own progress.

What to Expect in Our Sessions

Whether you are a beginner looking to understand the basics or an advanced player seeking to refine your professional edge, our classes will be tailored to your goals. We can dive into:

  • Bass & Guitar: From groove construction and harmony to advanced soloing techniques.

  • Vocal Coaching: Focusing on contemporary styles and performance.

  • Production & Composition/Songwriting: Helping you turn your ideas into polished demos.

I offer a professional yet relaxed environment where your curiosity leads the way. I am fully multilingual, and I’m happy to conduct our sessions in English, Spanish, or Portuguese, depending on your preference.

Curriculum

Teaching Method

My approach is rooted in the "Atelier" (Workshop) philosophy, where music is treated as a practical craft. I focus on "Artist Development". Whether we are working on Voice, Bass, or Songwriting, my method balances three core elements:

  1. Technical Foundation: Developing a healthy vocal technique, ergonomic instrumental posture, and a deep understanding of harmony.

  2. Creative Language: I emphasize Improvisation and Songwriting from the early stages. I help students find their unique "voice" by teaching them how to arrange their own ideas and understand the emotional architecture of a song.

  3. The Digital Canvas: We integrate modern tools (DAWs) to record and analyze progress. For songwriters, this means learning how to create professional-sounding demos and arrangements.

I believe in Socratic learning—I guide you through questions and challenges that lead to genuine "aha!" moments, ensuring that you don't just mimic, but truly understand the music you are making.

Recommended Student Texts & Resources

I tailor my recommendations to each student’s specific goals, but some of my core pillars include:

  • For Harmony & Theory: The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine (for a modern approach) and various classical treatises for foundational counterpoint.

  • For Songwriting & Aesthetics: I use a curated selection of literature and philosophy (from Borges to Marcus Aurelius) to help students expand their creative vocabulary and lyrical depth.

  • For Vocal Performance: A mix of contemporary vocal pedagogy and physiological awareness exercises.

  • Custom Materials: Students receive custom-made PDFs, backing tracks from my professional recordings (including tracks from my album Espiral), and specialized exercises designed for their specific technical needs.
