About
I am Agil Pirverdiyev, a FIDE Master and a full-time chess coach based in Baku, Azerbaijan. I have been teaching chess for 15 years and have worked with more than 100 students, from children who have just learned how the pieces move to rated club players preparing for their next tournament.
As a player I became U16 World Youth Champion and U14 European Youth Champion, and I won a team silver medal at the Chess Olympiad. My current FIDE ratings are 2411 classical and 2508 rapid (FIDE ID 13400568). I also hold the FIDE Trainer and FIDE Arbiter titles, and a Master's degree in Economics.
My students come from Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States and Asia. I teach in English, Turkish and Azerbaijani.
Every new student starts with a free 30-minute meeting. We look at one of your games together, I tell you honestly what is holding your rating back, and we agree on a plan before you commit to anything.
Teaching Style
I teach one to one, live, with a board we both look at and the camera on. Lessons are built around your own games, not around a fixed syllabus, because the fastest progress comes from understanding why your own moves went wrong.
A typical lesson: we review a game you played since our last session, isolate the one mistake that cost the most, work through positions that train exactly that idea, and finish with a short homework task of twenty to thirty minutes.
I adapt to the student, not the other way around. A nine year old gets puzzles, short exercises and constant feedback. An adult or a rated junior gets calculation training, pawn structures and real opening preparation. I do not give long theoretical lectures to beginners, and I do not give beginner tactics to a 1900 player.
The tone is calm and concrete. Between lessons students can send me their games and questions, and I answer them.
Curriculum
Personal training plan. After the first meeting every student gets a written plan built on three pillars - tactics, endgames and openings - weighted according to where the rating is actually being lost.
Beginner (up to 1000). How the pieces work together, the basic checkmates, one-move and two-move tactics, and opening principles instead of memorised lines. Materials: guided puzzle training on Lichess and Chess.com, plus short training games we analyse together.
Club level (1000 to 1600). Tactical patterns organised by theme, king and pawn endings, rook endings, and a compact opening repertoire that fits the student's style. Materials: Lichess studies I prepare individually for each student, and above all the student's own tournament games.
Advanced (1600 and above). Calculation and candidate-move training, positional decision making, typical middlegame structures, and engine-checked opening preparation. Materials: personal Lichess studies, database work, and deep analysis of the student's losses.
Homework. Short and specific - twenty to thirty minutes between lessons, never hours. We check it together at the start of the next session.
Students need a computer or tablet with a stable connection. All training material is provided; no purchase is required.
