I'm Amal Shankar, a singer, composer, music producer, and vocal trainer from Kerala, India. I have over 20 years of experience learning Carnatic music and six years of experience teaching vocals.
As a playback singer and music professional, I've worked on film music as a singer and as a composer in some singles. My musical background combines a strong foundation in Indian classical music with practical experience in music creation and performance.
I'm passionate about helping people discover their musical potential and develop their love for singing.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is practical, supportive, and tailored to each student's needs and goals. I focus on helping students understand their voices rather than simply imitate songs.
Lessons may include pitch training, breath control, voice culture, vocal exercises, and song practice, with concepts explained in a simple and accessible way. I incorporate Carnatic music fundamentals where appropriate and adapt the lessons to each student's level and interests.
Whether you're a beginner or have prior musical training, my goal is to help you build a strong vocal foundation, improve your technique, and sing with confidence and expression.
Curriculum
My teaching method combines structured vocal exercises with practical singing. Lessons are tailored to each student's level, goals, and learning pace.
We work on pitch accuracy, breath control, voice quality, vocal flexibility, and musical expression. I use demonstrations, guided practice, and constructive feedback to help students understand and improve their singing. Depending on the student's interests, lessons can include Carnatic music fundamentals, song learning, and preparation for performances or competitions.
I encourage consistent practice and focus on building skills progressively, so students can become more independent and confident singers.
Credentials & Affiliations
I have over 22 years of training in Carnatic vocal music and began performing in concerts at the age of eight or nine.
I am a playback singer, composer, music producer, and vocal trainer. My playback singing credits include the Malayalam films Gamanam, Aattam, 1956 Central Travancore, and Chola. My original compositions include Ritu and Maashinu.
My musical background spans Carnatic music, Western music, vocal performance, and composition. These experiences inform my approach to helping students develop their voices and learn to sing across different musical genres.
