About
Hi! I’m Carlos, a professional violist from Mexico and currently pursuing my Master of Music in Viola Performance at DePaul University in Chicago. I earned my Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from Illinois State University, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude.
As a performer, I have appeared as a soloist with orchestra, presented solo and chamber music recitals, and performed in collegiate and professional orchestras as both a section member and principal violist. I have also participated in renowned music festivals, including the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival as an Equity Arc Fellow, the Mexico Youth National Orchestra, the Lawrence University Chamber Music Festival, and the University of North Texas International String Music Institute.
Teaching Style
For me, teaching the violin or viola is about much more than learning how to play an instrument. It is about giving students the opportunity to challenge themselves both physically and intellectually while developing discipline, creativity, and confidence.
I take a holistic approach to teaching, emphasizing that great playing begins with awareness of the entire body, not just the hands or fingers. Healthy posture, freedom of movement, efficient technique, and mindful practice are essential to producing a beautiful sound and preventing unnecessary tension or injury.
My goal is to help students become not only skilled instrumentalists but also thoughtful, independent musicians. I encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and expressive playing while creating a supportive environment where students feel motivated to grow and enjoy the learning process.
Curriculum
I believe in an all-around approach to learning an instrument. In lessons, we focus on four main areas: scales, technique, etudes, and repertoire. Working on all of these together helps students grow into confident, well-rounded musicians, not just strong in one area.
Lessons are always tailored to each student’s level, goals, and pace of progress, so beginners and more advanced students alike can learn in a supportive and motivating environment.
Credentials & Affiliations
- Gannon Fellow, DePaul University School of Music (Graduate Merit Fellowship).
- Member, American Viola Society; Former Young Advisory Council Member (2024–2025).
- Teaching Assistant, Illinois State University String Project (2022–2026): Taught private lessons and small-group classes, conducted the advanced ensemble, and worked with beginning through advanced middle school string students (ages 8–14).
- Coursework in String Pedagogy: Completed coursework in heterogeneous string pedagogy and viola pedagogy, with an emphasis on instructional strategies and repertoire for students from beginner through collegiate levels.
- Every Child Can! Teacher Training, Suzuki Association of the Americas.
- Bone Scholarship Recipient, Illinois State University (highest undergraduate honor).
- Winner, Illinois State University Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition (2023); performed as soloist with the Illinois State University Symphony Orchestra.
