Harry Micklewright-Taylor

I have been teaching music professionally for over 4 years, (privately as well as for organisations including Andrew Parry Music, and Kent Music). During that time, I've helped people from all different backgrounds, ages, and neurodivergence achieve their goals.

I studied at the University of Kent where I graduated with a First-class BSc (Hons) in Music Technology and Audio Production. During my time there I helped run the Music Society (as Vice President/Treasurer) where we put on weekly events. I would also play there as part of a Music Performance Scholarship that I held for guitar.

Alongside music teaching, I’ve been involved in gigs around London and Kent both as a performer and attendee. I’ve played in a few bands (Jaz Dager/Danama/Pod3) at venues such as The Amersham Arms (New Cross London), and have been involved in casual Jam Nights. Since Covid, I started a YouTube channel combining music, guitar, comedy, and singer/songwriter tropes. I’ve since been writing more of my own music to release. One of the reasons I studied Music Technology was to better learn the process of music making inside a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation – recording software). More on the tech side, I’ve helped set-up sound for corporate events in London, for venues including St. Paul's Cathedral, the Cutty Sark, and the Young V&A.

I can't remember a time when music wasn't part of my life. I started playing guitar around the age of 6, and later learnt piano as well. I took part in a variety of ensembles growing up, from rock bands to orchestral percussion groups. I even formed and ran my own guitar club at age 15, as there wasn’t one available for me to join. In school I was usually known as the ‘school guitar player’ often hiding in the music department at break and performing at every chance I got.

Whether you have been playing for a long time, or are an absolute beginner, everyone deserves to enjoy music, and you can always learn something new.

I feel that my role as a teacher (beyond being an encyclopaedia for my instrument) is to help my students find and realise their motivation, and work on what they enjoy about music in the first place.

I like to use music theory and technical exercises to support this musical expression, so that every exercise has a specific musical purpose. I believe music lessons should be tailored to each individual student's needs.
