About
I am a native Igbo speaker, linguist, and experienced language educator with over eight years of teaching experience. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics/Igbo and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). I have taught Igbo to children, teenagers, and adults in both classroom and online learning environments, and I enjoy helping learners develop confidence in using the language naturally.
My Igbo lessons are practical, interactive, and tailored to each learner’s age, level, interests, and goals. Whether you are a complete beginner, learning Igbo to reconnect with your heritage, preparing for school examinations, travelling, communicating with family, or simply interested in learning a new language, I design lessons around what you want to achieve.
I teach essential vocabulary and expressions, greetings, introductions, numbers, pronunciation, Igbo alphabet and sounds, sentence construction, everyday conversations, grammar, proverbs, idioms, and aspects of Igbo culture and traditions. For more advanced learners, we can focus on conversational fluency, reading, writing, translation, public speaking, and culturally appropriate communication.
For children, I use age-appropriate activities, stories, pictures, repetition, conversations, games, and guided practice to make lessons enjoyable and memorable. For adults, I place greater emphasis on practical communication, pronunciation, vocabulary development, and real-life situations. I also adjust my teaching pace according to the learner's progress.
As a linguist and translator working with Igbo and English, I bring a strong understanding of both language structure and cultural context to my lessons. I believe that learning a language should not feel intimidating. My goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, practising, and gradually becoming confident speakers.
Most importantly, I want my students to leave each lesson knowing something useful that they can immediately apply in real-life communication. I look forward to helping you discover the beauty of the Igbo language and culture!
Teaching Style
My teaching style is interactive, patient, practical, and learner-centred. I believe students learn languages best when they are actively involved rather than simply memorising vocabulary.
I tailor each lesson to the learner's age, ability, interests, and goals. Beginners can expect clear explanations, pronunciation practice, vocabulary building, repetition, and simple conversations. More advanced learners can work on fluency, sentence construction, reading, writing, idioms, proverbs, and natural everyday communication.
For children, I incorporate age-appropriate stories, pictures, games, repetition, questions, and engaging activities to keep lessons enjoyable. For adults, I focus on practical situations such as greetings, family conversations, travel, work, introductions, social interactions, and cultural communication.
I create a supportive environment where learners feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I encourage students to practise during and between lessons so that they gradually develop confidence and independence.
My ultimate goal is simple: to help you understand Igbo, enjoy learning it, and confidently use it in real-life situations.
Curriculum
My teaching method is learner-centred, interactive, practical, and communicative. I adapt each lesson to the learner's age, current level, learning objectives, and preferred pace.
Lessons typically combine vocabulary development, pronunciation, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and cultural context. I use conversations, guided practice, pictures, stories, examples, repetition, role-play, questions and short activities to help learners actively use what they learn.
For beginners, I introduce the language gradually, starting with greetings, pronunciation, basic vocabulary, numbers, introductions, family, everyday expressions, and simple sentence construction. As learners progress, lessons become more conversational and include idioms, proverbs, reading, writing, grammar, and cultural expressions.
For children, I use age-appropriate and engaging activities to make learning enjoyable. For adults and heritage learners, I focus particularly on practical communication and situations they are likely to encounter in everyday life.
I also provide opportunities for revision and practice between lessons. I believe mistakes are a natural part of language learning, so I create a supportive environment where students can practise confidently without fear of making errors.
Recommended Student Texts
No single textbook is compulsory. I recommend learning materials according to the student's age, level, and goals. Where appropriate, I provide or recommend suitable Igbo vocabulary lists, reading passages, exercises, cultural materials, and teacher-prepared lesson resources.
Students may also benefit from having a notebook for vocabulary and expressions, as well as access to a reliable Igbo-English/English-Igbo dictionary. For younger learners, I may recommend age-appropriate Igbo storybooks and picture-based materials.
I will let each student know which materials are appropriate before or during the first few lessons, so that they do not need to purchase unnecessary books.
