Jeffrey Johan Dol

I’m Jeffrey Dol, a 26-year-old pianist, musician, songwriter, and teacher from the Netherlands. I have been playing piano since I was 10 years old. I initially taught myself by learning music that inspired me, starting with composers such as Ludovico Einaudi and exploring film music. Over time, my musical interests grew into jazz, blues, stride piano, improvisation, songwriting, and a wide range of contemporary styles.

I began taking formal music lessons at the age of 14 and later studied music at PACT+ Amsterdam from the age of 16 to 19, where I completed an MBO Level 4 diploma in music. During those years I gained extensive experience performing in and working with different bands and ensembles. This taught me not only how to play the piano, but also how to listen, accompany other musicians, improvise, play solos, and understand what a particular musical situation needs. One of the things I value most as a musician is knowing when to play more and, just as importantly, when to play less. I believe that a great pianist should add something meaningful to the music rather than simply fill space.

After PACT+, I continued my studies for one year in Jazz & Pop at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, where I had the opportunity to study with renowned Dutch pianist Bert van den Brink. I later studied pop piano for another year at Inholland Haarlem with Coen Molenaar. These studies gave me a strong technical and theoretical foundation, while also helping me develop a very practical and musical approach to playing. I have spent many years developing my ear, improvisation skills, harmonic knowledge, piano technique, and understanding of different sounds and musical styles. But still after all the theory I have learned and all the skills, It is still my purpose to truly keep making music from the heart instead of making it to theoretical.

After completing my studies, I started my own recording/teaching studio in Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands 2020-2024. I taught students with very different backgrounds and goals, ranging from classical piano and jazz to pop, free improvisation, songwriting, harmony, and even music without using the piano as the starting point. I have been teaching for more than eight years and genuinely enjoy helping people understand music and discover their own musical voice.

Alongside teaching, I have gained extensive live performance experience. I have performed at venues in Amsterdam such as Bourbon Street and The Waterhole, and I have played many nights with different bands and projects. I also performed at Patronaat in Haarlem with the band The Pelumas, supporting guitarist Leif de Leeuw. I also have recorded music that has reached more than 300,000 listeners on Spotify. At this stage of my career I am focusing increasingly on writing and recording my own music. I am currently working on a new piano EP, which will explore a very different side of my playing and musical personality. I now teach primarily from my home studio, which is fully equipped for both piano lessons and working with different sounds and recording techniques.

After more than a decade of playing and more than eight years of teaching, my goal is simple: to help students become better musicians while making the process genuinely enjoyable. Whether someone wants to learn their first songs, understand harmony, improvise, become a stronger accompanist, develop their technique, or simply express themselves more freely on the piano, I enjoy helping them find their own way into music.

My teaching style is personal, encouraging, and strongly focused on the individual student. I believe that learning music should be challenging enough to create real progress, but enjoyable enough that you genuinely want to sit down and play again after the lesson.

I adapt my lessons to each student's level, musical interests, personality, and goals. Some students want to become technically stronger, while others want to learn songs, improvise, understand chords and harmony, play jazz, accompany singers, write their own music, or simply become more confident at the piano. I do not believe there is one correct way to learn music, so I try to find the approach that makes the most sense for each person.

A major part of my teaching is helping students develop their musical ear and their sense of taste. I want students to understand not only what to play, but why something works and when it is appropriate to play it. We work on listening, rhythm, dynamics, harmony, phrasing, improvisation, technique, and musical expression. I especially enjoy teaching students how to say more with fewer notes and how to make their playing sound intentional and expressive rather than simply technically correct.

I also place a strong emphasis on understanding music rather than memorizing rules. My own background combines extensive theoretical training with many years of playing by ear and learning through experience, and I bring that combination into my lessons. Students can expect clear explanations, practical exercises, plenty of playing, and a relaxed atmosphere where there is room to experiment, make mistakes, ask questions, and have fun.

Most importantly, I want my students to feel inspired. Progress is important, but I believe the best lessons are the ones that make you leave the piano wanting to play more.
