About
Joe Scott is a Spain/New York–based pianist, keyboardist, producer, composer, songwriter, arranger and vocalist with over 30 years of experience in recording, television, touring and music education.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with an impressive range of internationally renowned artists, working across soul, R&B, jazz, funk, pop, rock and world music.
His career highlights include performing at the King of Morocco’s New Year’s Eve celebration in 1990, touring with M.C. Hammer during the Too Legit To Quit era in 1992, recording and performing with Hassan Hakmoun and Real World Records in 1995–96, and appearing alongside Peter Gabriel and Hassan Hakmoun at Woodstock and WOMAD in 1996.
In 1997, Joe worked with Teddy Riley during the No Diggity era, and in 1999 he contributed Wurlitzer and Clavinet keyboard performances to Lauryn Hill’s landmark album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
From 2010 to 2017, he continued his work as a recording musician, educator and performer in New York, combining extensive professional experience with a deep understanding of musical styles, production and live performance.
Today, Joe collaborates with vocalist Gemma Genazzano, bringing together his rich musical background and refined keyboard sound to create an intimate blend of smooth soul, chill-out, jazz and light funk, with an elegant, Mediterranean atmosphere reminiscent of Sade.
Teaching Style
Do you already play piano, but feel that something is missing?
Maybe you know the chords and the notes, but you want your playing to feel more natural, expressive and alive. Maybe you want to develop real groove, improve your improvisation, understand harmony better, or discover your own sound.
That’s where I can help.
With more than 30 years of experience as a professional pianist and musician in New York and internationally, I can help you develop the skills that go beyond technique — feel, timing, groove, musicality and authenticity.
My lessons are personalised, practical and focused on the music you love. You’ll learn not only what to play, but why it works and how to make it feel good.
Whether you are an advanced pianist, a professional musician, a singer-songwriter or simply someone who wants to take their playing seriously, we’ll work together to unlock the next level of your musicianship.
Book your first lesson and let’s discover what’s missing from your playing — and how to make it come alive.
Curriculum
I offer high-level piano coaching for musicians who want to go beyond simply playing the right notes.
My approach is rooted in the authentic feel of American music — particularly soul, R&B, funk, jazz and gospel. I focus on what makes music actually groove: timing, feel, pocket, phrasing, dynamics, harmony, rhythm and musical authenticity.
I believe that great piano playing is not about playing more notes. It’s about knowing when to play, when not to play, how to listen, and how to make the music feel good.
Throughout my career, I have performed, recorded and worked with internationally recognised artists, including Lauryn Hill, Peter Gabriel, M.C. Hammer, Teddy Riley and Hassan Hakmoun. I bring this real-world professional experience directly into my teaching.
My lessons are personalised to each musician, whether you are an advanced pianist, a professional musician, a singer-songwriter or an experienced player who feels that something is missing from your playing.
We can work on:
- Groove and rhythmic feel
- Soul, R&B, funk and jazz piano
- American voicings and harmony
- Pocket and timing
- Improvisation and musical vocabulary
- Accompaniment and playing with singers
- Developing your own sound
- Playing with authenticity rather than imitation
- Understanding how professional musicians actually interact in a band
- Preparing for recording sessions and live performance
My goal is not to turn you into another pianist.
My goal is to help you find your own voice — with deeper groove, stronger musicality and an authentic feel.
