About
Your bright/straight-A/high-achieving Grade 8-12 teen is suddenly getting 50s, 60s, or is failing maths...and you don't know why. You're both worried.
Your capable teen suddenly isn’t doing as well as they usually do. They want to get into the Medical Sciences/Architecture/Engineering, and if they don’t improve before submitting their reports...oh my goodness.
New routines, new changes, moving from pillar to post...and you’re all worried.
Teaching Style
Here are the three phases of how I teach:
Phase 1: First assessment
I plan our first four sessions to see what terrain we're dealing with, and how far back the foundational cracks go. If your teen struggles with graphs and factorisation, they're most likely struggling with how fractions, variables and missing Grade 8-9 information works in Grade 10-11.
Phase 2: A cycle of introduction, assimilation and reinforcement
I help get them comfortable with new topics, strengthen their understanding, and show them that they CAN do this.
Phase 3: The final reinforcement
We work on speed and reinforcement with everything they learnt so they can think independently without needing to rely on a crutch, not just be ready for a final exam.
Curriculum
A lot of what I cover seems so basic...but these are exactly the culprits sabotaging your teen's progress. Here's what my curriculum primarily covers:
• Fractions: identifying, adding and subtracting fractions, what pattern comes next in fraction sequences (the overwhelming majority of my students collectively struggle with this)
• Prime factorisation, number operations, unions, ratios, percentages
• Techniques from long division you’ll use in Grade 10/11
• Not relying on your calculator
• Squares and square roots
• What are variables (and why do we use them)?
• Identifying parts of expressions
• Factorisation
• Grouping
• Manoeuvring exponents
• Introduction to linear graphs
• What even IS a function?
• Going more in-depth with linear graphs
• How to draw a linear graph from a table
• What makes this table a linear function? (first difference stays the same when you subtract values)
• Dual-intercept method
• Parabolas
• Hyperbolas
• Asymptotes
• Euclidean geometry
• Cartesian geometry
• Trig functions and identities
I also cover:
• Cubic functions
• Pre-calculus
• Calculus
