About

I began studying music as a child in rural North Carolina. I studied classical violin and commercial percussion until choosing an unorthodax path of Bluegrass, Country, and Old-Time music studies as my undergraduate program. After college, I moved to Norway and studied Jazz Violin and Improvisational Music at the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) in Oslo. I've been beyond lucky to have studied with legends of improvisational vioin music such as Tcha Limberg, Casey Driessen, and Hunter Berry.

Over my 20+ years of playing the violin I have earned such awards and titles as North Carolina Master Fiddler, Fiddler's Grove Fiddler of the Festival, The International Bluegrass Music Awards Vocal Group Momentum Award and The Berea College Pinnacle Award. I was part of a recording project that was nominated for the 2016 Spellemansprisen (Norwegian Grammy) when I lived in Norway. As an educator I haved received awards such as, The Stephen L. Fisher Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Price-Deverick Education Scholarship. I moved back to NC in 2020 and now have a family of my own. I still tour and perform but have devoted more and more of my time to music education.

Teaching Style

I let my students' own unique goals and interests guide the methods I use and direction of our lessons while making sure that they are not held back by technical or conceptual challenges that most music students face. My job as an educator is to set up and facilitate my students' visions of what they want to become as musicians. I've studied an ecclectic variety of styles to suit the wide range of approaches needed to support students in this way. My highest priority as a teacher is making sure my students fullfill their potential in the realm of music that interests them personally.
