Rodrigo Orviz Pevida

Hi! Hola! I’m Rodrigo Orviz, a clarinet and bass clarinet player and teacher from Oviedo, Spain.

I studied clarinet at ESMAE in Porto, Portugal, where I completed my Bachelor’s degree, and then continued my studies in the United States. I earned a Master’s in Music, Performance, Literature and Pedagogy from Northwestern University and another Master’s in Music from Bard College. More recently, I completed a Master’s in Secondary School Teacher Training with a focus on music pedagogy at Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio in Madrid.

As a performer, I have had the opportunity to play in some great venues and with many different ensembles. I have performed at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and David Geffen Hall in New York with The Orchestra Now. I have also performed with orchestras in Spain and the United States, including Oviedo Filarmonía, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, and The Orchestra of San Antonio. As a soloist, I have performed works such as Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with Orquestra Sem Fronteiras in Portugal.

Teaching has always been an important part of what I do. From 2021 to 2025, I taught clarinet, piano, music theory, and aural skills at Divertimento Academy of Music in Oviedo. I have also taught masterclasses and workshops in Spain, Portugal, Colombia, Chile, and the United States.

I enjoy working with students at different levels, from complete beginners to more advanced players preparing for auditions or performances. I also teach in Spanish, so feel free to get in touch and tell me a little about yourself and what you would like to work on!

I try to keep my lessons practical, relaxed, and adapted to the person in front of me. Every student is different, and I don’t think that everyone needs to learn the clarinet in the same way.

Depending on your level and goals, we might work on the basics of producing a good sound, breathing, articulation, rhythm, and technique, or we might spend more time on repertoire, musical expression, auditions, or performance preparation. I like to combine technical exercises with pieces that are interesting and enjoyable to play. I think it is much easier to improve when you are actually enjoying the music you are working on.

I have taught students in music academies, schools, conservatories, universities, and masterclasses, and I have worked with both children and adults. My experience has also included teaching clarinet, piano, music theory, and aural skills, which has given me a broader perspective on how different parts of musicianship connect with each other.

For me, a good lesson isn’t just about telling you what you did wrong. I want you to understand what you are doing, why you are doing it, and what you can do when you practice on your own. Mistakes are completely normal, especially when learning an instrument, so I want my students to feel comfortable experimenting and asking questions.

My main goal is for you to make progress while enjoying the process. Whether you want to learn the clarinet as a hobby, prepare for an audition, improve your playing, or simply get better at a piece you love, we can work together to find the right approach.
