Trevor Hayes

I am an experienced instrumental music educator with over a decade of success as a Director of Bands at the middle and high school levels. I earned a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education (cum laude) from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and hold a Florida Professional Educator Certificate with a Music K-12 endorsement. My teaching career has included leadership roles at Rutherford High School, Santa Fe High School, Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie, Martin County High School, and currently Signal Mountain Middle High School, where I direct the Signal Corps Marching Band and High School Symphonic Band while co-teaching middle school bands.

My primary areas of interest center on building high-achieving ensemble programs, including marching band, concert/symphonic band, jazz ensemble, indoor winds/percussion, and colorguard. I am particularly passionate about student achievement through rigorous preparation for assessments, honor ensembles, and competitive events, as well as the practical aspects of program leadership such as budget management, instrument inventory systems, music arranging (Finale), and drill design (Pyware).What sets me apart is a consistent record of elevating programs to new levels of excellence: securing first Superior ratings in years, returning ensembles to state-level performance assessments after long absences, producing state finalists and class champions, achieving near-universal Superior ratings at Solo & Ensemble, and regularly placing students in regional and state honor bands. My background as a performing trumpeter, undergraduate conducting experience, and ongoing professional affiliations further strengthen my ability to model musicianship while fostering disciplined, successful student ensembles.

As an experienced band director and trumpet instructor, I blend rigorous technical precision with an encouraging, ensemble-focused approach that prioritizes both individual mastery and collective musical excellence. My lessons emphasize strong foundational skills—proper embouchure, efficient breath support, accurate articulation, and consistent tone production—while developing advanced techniques such as range, flexibility, and expressive phrasing tailored to each student’s level and goals. Whether working one-on-one or in a band setting, I foster discipline, attentive listening, and rhythmic precision through structured yet flexible instruction, balancing detailed technical work with opportunities for real-world performance. Feedback is always clear, constructive, and supportive, combining patient demonstration, targeted exercises, and collaborative music-making to build confidence and artistry. My teaching is practical, results-oriented, and rooted in the belief that solid technique and a shared commitment to excellence create skilled musicians and inspiring ensembles.
