YANG CANYIN

I began playing the piano at the age of 4 and have been performing for over 22 years. In August 2016, I gave my debut solo recital in China. That same year, I was ranked 8th nationally in the entrance exam and admitted to the Piano Department of Wuhan Conservatory of Music, where I studied under Prof. Xiao Tan, a renowned Chinese-French pianist.

In 2021, I pursued my Master's degree in Piano Performance at Kalaidos Musikhochschule in Switzerland, mentored by Dr. Ya-ou Xie—a celebrated pianist, conductor, and piano performance doctoral graduate. During my master's studies, I won Second Prize at the 11th International Music Competition "Amigdala" in Italy (2022), and First Prize at both the International Music Competition "ZHARA" and International Music Competition "COMPASS" in Russia (2023). That same year, I performed two solo recitals in Berlin, receiving high acclaim from the dean, faculty members of the Berlin University of the Arts, and renowned German pianists. I graduated with the highest distinction—"sehr gut"—ranking 1st among all bachelor's and master's graduates in my cohort.

In 2023, I joined a university in China as a piano faculty member, teaching Piano Performance, Music Theory, and Solfège. My students have won multiple first-place awards at city-level competitions. In 2025, I began my Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Piano Performance at Sejong University in South Korea, and gave my third solo recital in Seoul in 2026.

I am a native Mandarin Chinese speaker and offer lessons in Chinese, English, or a bilingual format. My teaching philosophy is rooted in both rigor and warmth—I believe in building solid technique while nurturing each student's unique musical voice.

I use real-time translation headphones to teach piano in any language, and offer full Chinese-immersion instruction upon request. I have over 10 years of teaching experience, including 1 year as an online piano teacher for a tech company in Shanghai, and currently serve as a university piano faculty member (since 2023). After each lesson, I provide students with clear, written notes and assignments to help them review and practice effectively between classes.

I am a native Mandarin Chinese speaker with a Grade A National Putonghua Certificate (the highest proficiency level recognized in China). All of my piano lessons are conducted entirely in Chinese—making my studio a truly immersive environment where students develop their pianism and their Mandarin skills simultaneously. For heritage families, this is a wonderful way for children to maintain and deepen their language abilities while learning music. For adult learners intrigued by Chinese culture, every lesson becomes a cultural journey through language, music, and the stories behind the pieces we explore together.

My teaching style blends professionalism, warmth, precision, and attentiveness. I bring the rigor of my conservatory training to every lesson—holding my students to high standards while always being patient and approachable. I believe that a supportive, encouraging environment is essential for growth, and I pay close attention to every detail, from hand position and tone production to musical expression and phrasing.

One of my greatest strengths is the ability to explain complex musical concepts in simple, everyday language. Whether it's breaking down a dense contrapuntal passage or clarifying a subtle harmonic shift, I help students truly understand what they are playing and why. I also love drawing from orchestral and operatic repertoire to bring piano pieces to life—showing how a solo piano work can evoke the colors of a full symphony or the drama of an opera stage. This approach deepens students' musical imagination and transforms their playing from note-reading into genuine storytelling.

My experience spans the full spectrum of piano education—from early childhood(age 3 and up) to professional conservatory audition preparation. I have taught beginners discovering the keyboard for the first time, intermediate students building their technique and repertoire, and advanced students refining their artistry for competitions, ABRSM/Trinity exams, and university auditions. No matter the level, I adapt my teaching to each student's individual goals, learning style, and personality.
