About

Duane Denison first came to public notice through his work with Chicago based alternative rock band The Jesus Lizard, whose albums "Goat" and "Liar" made Rolling Stone magazine's "Top 100 Albums of the 90's" list. He has since gone on to perform and record with a variety of bands and artists, including Tomahawk, The Unsemble, Hank Williams III, Beverley Knight, and numerous others. Mr Denison holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music from Eastern Michigan University and has studied guitar with such notable figures as Juan Serrano and Paul Warren, among others. He began performing with local rock outfits at the age of 15 and within a few years was teaching guitar as well.

I would describe my teaching style as a combination of theory and practice. I try to present concepts and ideas in a simple, direct manner (with tablature or standard notation documents whenever possible, which the student can collect and form into a workbook) and then provide examples of how to use these concepts in a performance setting.  I feel that scales, excercises, and etudes are important but should also be supplemented with songs and actual compositions. I'm also not above taking requests and teaching specific things that the student may wish to learn, such as famous tunes, solos, standards, etc provided it's within my realm of knowledge.

Times outside of the regular schedule may be available on request.

Very knowledgeable, friendly and patient. Great balance between theory and practicality. His exercises can be integrated into your guitar playing as much as giving you a better understanding of the instrument.

Amazingly talented, a great teacher and very easy to get along with. What else is there to know? His knowledge of music theory, rock and experimentation makes him a great resource for any weirdo guitarist wanting to expand his/her horizons!

Duane is awesome. He sent me materials in advance to look over and broke everything down very clearly for me. The materials he sent felt like a perfect fit for what I was looking for in terms of challenge and skill level. He's extremely talented and skilled so that helps, too. I'm excited for our next lesson.

Duane was great; he was very casual, informative and happy to discuss any aspects of both his own music and general musical practise/practice.

I had my first one hour lesson today with Duane. He was fantastic. He clearly articulated his ideas in a simple, straightforward, easily graspable manner and with (here's the best part) humor! He sent me a few exercises before the lesson so I had time to get familiar with what were covering. Duane shared a lot of really useful ideas and tips about the technical and mental aspects of learning, playing and performing. He gave me ideas on how to expand the material by transposing keys, learning different positions on the neck, etc, and how to make the material more musical as opposed to merely mechanically playing scales or modes or arpeggios. He maintained a very clear professional and positive attitude throughout while remaining friendly, open and accessible. There is a distinctly refreshing absence of any dynamic resembling anything like, "I am the great and powerful teacher and you are the lowly student groping around in the dark". I felt he was treating me as a peer who wants to expand his musical foundation and experience in a challenging yet comfortable and supportive setting by someone with the knowledge I seek. And that's exactly what I'm getting here. It's inspiring. Thanks Duane!
