Ned Oldham
About
Louisville Kentuckian Ned Oldham formed the art-punk band Languid and Flaccid with Slint-to-be members Brian McMahon and Britt Walford in 1981. Since then he has performed and recorded with an amazing cast of musicians including David Grubbs, Jason Lowenstein, Mick Turner, Jim White, David Heumann, Matt Sweeney, Shirley Collins, and his two younger brothers, Paul and Will “Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy” Oldham. In 1994, he formed The Anomoanon with Aram Stith, Jack Carneal and Willy Maclean, and over more than a dozen releases explored psychedelic folk rock territory to critical acclaim in the US and abroad. In 2007, he moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, and not long after formed Old Calf, whose debut album Borrow a Horse came out on No Quarter Records in 2011, a year after his debut solo mini-ep Let’s Go Out Tonight came out on Gold Robot Records. Ned has a major role and music in the feature film I Used to be Darker, directed by Matt Porterfield, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2013; his song “One That Got Away,” featured in performance in the film, won Best Original Song at the 2013 Nashville Film Festival.
30+ years of study and practice of music and many years as a teacher continue to affirm to me that the best learning takes place in the presence of desire and determination on the parts of both student and teacher. My guitar-playing, singing and songwriting styles are idiosyncratic but rooted in fundamentals and rock and folk idioms, which alongside my experience with a wide variety of guitars and amplifiers and approaches to recording and performance, will help you develop a technical arsenal, chops, and--hopefully and most importantly--a style of your own.
