Erin Roberts
About
Hi! I'm Erin Roberts, a singing, acting, and public speaking coach with 20 years of teaching experience working with children and adults as performers, hobbyists and professionals. I help each of my students develop practical voice skills, while feeling more confidence, passion and fun in singing and speaking.
Since 2007 I have coached children and adults in private lessons, schools, and community arts programs, drawing on my experience as a performer and educator. My approach combines vocal technique, breath, presence, and personalized practice to help each student grow as a singer, performer, or speaker.
I hold a B.A. in Vocal Performance from the University of Minnesota and a Master’s degree in Education from National University. My performance experience includes engagements with San Diego Opera, San Diego Symphony, Sacra Profana, La Jolla Playhouse, and Onstage Playhouse. I have taught music, theatre, and English for San Diego Unified School District, School District of Waukesha, and supported students going on to audition for school plays, college level auditions, and speaking for professional organizations.
Teaching Style
I help singers, speakers and actors learn to use their voices with strength and passion! My teaching philosophy falls between technique, structure, and creative freedom, a delicate
balance which is a key to successful instruction in the performing arts. Students are encouraged to use singing and acting as an outlet for personal expression, fulfillment and leadership.
Singing: Build healthy vocal technique, breath support, range, expression, and confidence across styles from musical theatre and classical to jazz and pop.
Acting: Explore character development, stage presence, gesture, diction, body language and audition preparation in a supportive setting that can be applied to scene study or production participation.
Public speaking: Strengthen your voice and presence for presentations, interviews, meetings, and other moments when you want your message to land.
Curriculum
A typical lesson consists of:
--Physical and vocal warm ups
--Exercises targeted to building vocal technique
--Ear training
--Theory
--Developing a portfolio of performance-ready songs that vary in genre, style and difficulty.
–Speakers or actors will build a portfolio of scenes, scripts or other content that fits their goals, rather than songs.
