About

Hi, I'm Jonny!

I'm a musician and a DJ from New York City. I started performing in my early twenties and I've been teaching for the last 14 year.
I was on the faculty of Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York as an adjunct professor in the mid 2000s .

I taught undergraduate and graduate courses for four years - teaching  software using a Mac computer (Digital Performer by MOTU, Pro Tools and Reason from Propellerheads).

Besides teaching. I'm actively producing my own music and doing remixes for other artists.
In the last three years I've had releases on vinyl/digital for various music labels here in Europe and Australia. My own music is primarily for the dance floor and DJs. I actively DJ with a recent tour of Japan last November.  You can hear some of my own music production and DJ mixes here:

I've  worked as a composer for the music producer of a children's television show called Ghostwriter on PBS.  I toured with the singer Joan Osborne's band as a DJ in the band and triggering samples.  In the early 1980s I was in the band KONK in NYC. We performed at many iconic New York Clubs including Mudd Club, Paradise Garage, Danceteria and The Loft. This is when I started DJing.  I've DJ'd at many clubs in New York City throughout the 1980s, '90s and up until moving to France.

I'm now living in France with my family, right next to the Swiss border. I've been teaching electric and acoustic guitar, and electric bass to kids, teens and adults. Both privately and at a school in Geneva, Switzerland. My students are from from the ages of 8 years and up.

Teaching Style

- I teach in a friendly, non-judgmental manner. Using a wide selection of contemporary popular music.  I use the songs to help students understand their instrument also teaching the basics of applied theory along the way.  We discuss the need to relax as you play and to get into a mindful state of "listening".

- Using a simple blues progression and scale  students learn how to improvise. Learning the blues is a great introduction to improvisation and how to create your own music.  Understanding the blues is an important part of being able to play most popular music.
I use current hits and popular music from the last 60 years plus Jazz standards for students interested in beginning to learn jazz improvisation.

Curriculum

In addition to teaching guitar and bass I can coach students in their music production, vocal performance, drum programming and DJ technique (if they own their own DJ equipment).
