About

After graduating in 1992 from ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) with a master's degree in Mathematics, I enjoyed a career in math education as a high school teacher and community college instructor. Now, I provide math tutoring services to students in grades 6-16. The tuition will help you reach mastery of the foundational mathematical skills, and achieve the analytical proficiency required in more advanced subjects like calculus and beyond.

Teaching Style

There's a rather small number of fundamental math skills needed to become a confident, independent learner—mental math is one of them. I emphasize those skills and want my students to reach mastery before moving on to the next topic. To that end, I teach these techniques and strategies in several (redundant) layers: modeling, varying, analyzing, and comparing. Once a student masters the basic concepts (e.g., fractions, function, linearity), it is possible to plunge into any advanced topic like calculus.

Not every student is the same. Therefore it helps if the teacher can approach a concept in different ways and modes, and choose one that fits the student's learning style best. Small, incremental challenges help the student build up confidence in their abilities and revisiting a topic from a different point of view will deepen the understanding.
