About

A graduate of UCLA, William Hsu is a flutist, piccoloist, contrabass flutist, pianist, saxophonist, clarinetist, and conductor.  He started formally learning music at the age of 5, but even before that, some family members would even say that his first language was music!  His training includes formal classical and flute training, then self study on clarinet, saxophone, and a few other instrument (but doesn’t own them, so he can’t teach them on Lessonface).  Aside from only classical training, he has experience playing in other styles including broadway, jazz, gospel, Chinese pop, and Japanese pop instrumentals.

In the past, he has received the Ebell music scholarship for Anaheim Union High School District, and played with various ensembles at UCLA.  This includes playing upper woodwinds for Seussical the MusicalHow to Succeed in Business Without Really Tryingirl, Titanic the Musical, Drowsy Chaperone, and assistant conducting for How to Succeed and conducting for Curtains: The Musical, as well as singing in the UCLA Gospel Choir, Taiwanese American Union Acapella, and playing flute, piccolo, and tuba for the UCLA Symphonic Band.  He is currently actively plays contrabass flute with the Game Music Ensemble at UCLA, serves at Chinese Baptist Church of Orange County as a woodwinds specialist, french hornist, and musical director for the Instrumental Ensemble, choir member for the Christmas Choir, and pianist, guitarist, and flutist for worship services, as well as being a woodwind specialist and assistant conductor for the First Evangelical Community Church of Cerritos.

In 2011, when he went to his homeland, Taiwan, for the first time, he introduced himself to family members by putting on a piano and flute recital at the Kaohsiung Neiwei Presbyterian Church.  He has also recently attended workshops in Hadar Noiberg's Self-Sufficient Flutist series showcasing different personalities of the contrabass flute.  And in April 2020, he coordinated 85 flutists (from piccolo all the way to double contrabass flute!) together to play William Tell Overture in order to bring some joy to people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Teaching Style

I have been teaching music ever since I was 15-years-old, first to younger students at my high school, then now to a range of students pre-school age through adult.

I believe one of the most important things for a student is to understand what they want to achieve.  With this, I first assess what a student's level is, as well as figure out what direction they want to take.  From there, I handcraft each of my lessons to meet those needs and goals.  Not sure what your goals are?  That’s perfectly fine!  We can discover that together!

If your goal is to learn a piece for school band, then we work on that!  If your goal is to get into All-State Honor Band, then we work on that!  If you just have that one piece of music you really want to learn, then we work on that!

I will be your teacher, as well as your biggest musical advocate.  I look forward to being by your side as you grow into your best musical self! :)
