About

Hi there, I have been playing and studying the guitar and music for 35 years. This passion took me out of high school and into post-secondary music education where I obtained a bacherlors Degree in Jazz Performance and a Masters in Music Theory. I have made all kinds of music over the years from straight ahead jazz to the extremes of Avant Garde experimentation and from Pop and folk to country and rock.

My journey started with Kiss in the 70s, progressive neo-classical guitarists like Yngwie and Jason Becker through the 80s and Jazz virtuosos like Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell through the 90s and beyond. the 2000s saw me get deep into Creative music through David S Ware, William Parker, Joe Maneri all while simultaneously pursuing electronic composition and Americana, songwriting and producing.

I have been teaching full time since September 2000 with little forays into it prior to that. To be honest, I thought that teaching would hurt my creative drive but in reality it has only expanded it.

I am a teacher with a studio in Victoria BC Canada and of course at the moment with the global pandemic of the Corona Virus I am looking to offer a portal to my existing students in an envirnoment that is respectable and clear, with good audio and video qualities.

Teaching Style

I have been playing and studying the guitar and music for 35 years. This passion took me out of high school and into post-secondary music education where I obtained a bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance and a Masters in Music Theory. I have made all kinds of music over the years from straight ahead jazz to the extremes of Avant Garde experimentation and from Pop and folk to country and rock.

I always describe my teaching style as supportive and patient. I don't believe that a lesson environment should involve any pressure to be better than you are able to be in that moment. some days are better than others for all of us and sometimes we get busy and are less able to explore the instrument than other times. It is all about experiencing the instrument in your journey to have a better time playing it. We all need to be realistic about our path and our goals and I feel that any amount of time spent contemplating and pursuing music is worthwhile.

Curriculum

I make all of my own materials as I have not ever found a singular method that is complete and valuable on it's own. As a highly educated musician I contemplate all of the ways to explore the journey and if a new methodology rears it's head in a spontaneous moment I will write our exercises in Guitar Pro software and post them to the lesson or email them to my students. I have a vast archive of exercises and approaches, tabs and more and if a song is desired I will create a tab that is at the right level for my student. The vast archive of tabs at My Songbook and Songsterr are often very poorly rendered so I create the ideal tab myself.
