About

Hello. My name is Terrence Butler. I've been playing the piano and singing in groups since I was 11 years old. I am a graduate of Columbia University with a degree in Music. I am currently studying to become certified as a Music Teacher in the State of New York.  I play and teach many different styles , however the two main styles that I draw from are Classical and Gospel music. I consider myself to be Early Advanced at the Piano. I also play the drums and the bass as well but do not teach these instruments as of yet.

I have played in many Jazz and Fusion Bands and have also done the Top40/Wedding Band circuit as well. I play for a lot of churches as well. I have played and produced many tracks and am looking forward to my first EP .

Teaching Style

I prefer to teach my students to sight-read and play by ear at the same time.   I pepper my lessons with music theory lessons that I do as part of my lesson plan.  My approach to music especially for beginners is to make it fun and enjoyable.  I listen to what the student likes and try to incorporate some of their music into when I teach by ear.

Curriculum

John Schuam, John Thompson, Alfreds Piano Method, Bastien Piano Method for adults are some of method books that I use. I also integrate the use of music apps and YouTube videos when I can. I teach music theory through worksheets that focus on learning something specific as well as utilizing musictheory.net .
