Roberto Pistolesi
About
My name is Roberto Pistolesi and I've been playing the drums professionally since 1999. I am an established drummer/artist in the European music community, and I have toured the world with world with several jazz artists, among whom I like to mention Stefano Di Battista, Rick Margitza, Francesco Cafiso, Ivan Segreto, Dave Liebman, Alex Britti, Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, Tineke Postma, Jesse Van Ruller. I have played in festivals all over the world in more than 20 states, and I have gained a lot of experience in live performances as in studio recording.
I have also worked in several National TV shows in my country, among which " Il Senso Della VIta" and "Domenica In", where I have perfected my sight reading and my all-around playing.
I simply love to teach the drums, and I have started to do so very early, feeling the need to communicate my knowledge and my discoveries. I'm myself an eternal student, and still research every day how to teach myself and the other in the most beneficial way. I have tought in Rome, privately in my studio, at U.M. and Ciac music studio. I have recently moved to the Netherlands, where I have built my own studio, where I teach, practice, rehearse.
Teaching Style
Education
I was educated in classical music as a kid, and I started to play drums in my teens, under the guidance of Azeglio Izzizzari. Later on I moved to Rome and I have studied at U.M. , a very famous multi-styilistic music school, with Fabrizio Sferra, Maurizio Dei Lazzaretti, Pierpaolo Ferroni. in 2006 I have started my series of trips to New York City, where I have deepened my knowledge of the drums and music, and where I have been going back since then. There I have studied with Kenny Washington, John Riley, Dan Weiss, Sam Ulano, Ari Hoenig, Kendrick Scott, Michael Carvin, Billy Drummond. IN 2016 I moved to the Netherlands to do a master in the prestigious Hanze University of Applied Science, being selected for a Master in Music. In 2018 I lived in NY for six months, keeping studying with my masters. From NY, I reached to Boston to study with the great master Bob Gullotti, former student of Alan Dawson. In the same year I have finished my Master in Music presenting a thesis entitled "inner melodicism and drumming", and I settled in the Netherlands ever since.
I love to inspire students, I've been teaching drums from 20 years now, along with my live musician career. My teaching style is friendly, direct and aims to get in the student the passion to go further and discover the amazing world of drums.
Curriculum
My teaching method has standards but I like to keep it PERSONALIZED. I use the most famous texts for drum education, but my aim consists in getting the student the right amount of information, educating him to learn through all senses, not only reading on a piece of paper. I provide my own exercises to the student, and if she/he is committed ,I recommend him to buy lifetime texts as Stick Control, Syncopation by Ted Reed, Wilcoxon 150 snare drum solos, Wilcoxon 25 swing solos, John Riley's books, Jim Chapin. With these and a few other books, a drummer has a lot of information already, but if it's needed, I have tons of material, personal concepts and systems to share.
