About

Hi! My name is Luis Alves and I am a portuguese clarinet teacher!

Currently, I'm finishing a Bachelor degree in Music  Performance at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien - Austria, with the retired Wiener Philharmoniker player,  Johann Hindler. I already have a Bachelor degree in Music Perfomance at the Universidade do Minho, in Braga - Portugal.   Nowadays, I am playing in the Portuguese Police Band.

I began my musical studies in Tui at the age of 12 years old, with Sofia Boente and Esteban Ubiña(Spain), where I performed in a solistic capacity with Wind Orchestra and Strings Orchestra.  In July 2014, I finished my studies in Tui with a concert, where I won the Merit Scholarship of the same year. In 2013 and 2014,  he won the Young Soloists Concerts, in Tui (Spain).

In 2014, I joined the Universidade do Minho (Braga - Portugal), in the class of Doctor Vitor Matos. Following  my learning of the clarinet, I worked with teachers like: Matthias Schorn (Solo Clarinetist of Wiener Philharmoniker), Johann Hindler, Alessandro Carbonare (Solo Clarinetist of Orchestra di Santa Cecilia), Tibor Reman (Solo Clarinetist of Staatskapelle Berlin), Dominique Vidal, Angelo Montanaro.

Regarding orchestras, I performed several times with Professional Orchestra from Universidade do Minho, Webern Symphonie Orcheste.  In August 2016, I was choosen to play in a Mozart’s Requiem project in Mont Blanc (France), with Matthieu Schweyer as conductor.

I worked with maestros such as: Matthieu Schweyer, Francesco Belli, Pedro Neves, Roberto Rega, Gerardo Estrada, Julián Lombana, António Vitorino de Almeida (participated in the premiere of the Sixth Symphony of Vitorino de Almeida, entitled UMinho, composed for the 41st anniversary of Universidade do Minho), Daniel Gazon, Nick Ost, Vitor Matos, Vasco Faria, Gil Magalhães, Artur Pinho Maria, Claude Villaret.

I performed in places like Theatro Circo (Braga - Portugal), Vila Flor Cultural Center (Guimarães - Portugal), Medieval Hall of the University of Minho (Braga - Portugal), Big Auditorium of Culturgest (Lisbon), Teatro Afundación (Vigo), Musikverein (Vienna - Austria), Schlosstheater Schönbrunn (Vienna - Austria).

In 2014 he started to give Clarinet classes in a Band’s school, until 2018, when he came to Viena, to follow his dream as a big musician.

I am very glad to have the chance to reach students all over the world through online lessons and bring  you inside this awesome clarinet community!

So, wherever you are, whatever your goals in clarinet are, I will be very happy to help you work on them!

Teaching Style

In my way of thinking, each student is different.  Some students have diferent goals, some students have diferent characteristics. I don't have only one method for all the students, each teacher needs to adapt to the dificulties of each student. Some may experience more difficulties in certain aspects that others may not, and viceversa.

Once I understand what your goals are and what you expect to get out of your lessons, we will work on a personalized plan, focused on getting you results as fast as you can. Usually this means, for adult or older students, a detailed work plan to follow between lessons, by yourself, at home, so that you keep advancing even outside the lessons. For younger children this can also mean a more systematic support and also guidelines for the parents, so they can help the practice at home.

If you are a beginner student, don't worry! We will both go step by step, learning first bases on position, tuning, music reading (if that is the case), and clarinet technique.

For me it's really important to work on a good and relaxed posture as well, so we prevent somos injuries.
