Amanda
About
Hello, my name is Amanda Massengill.
I have taught piano and voice privately for four years and have been a musician for fifteen. As a young adult I studied piano and voice privately until I earned my Bachelor's of Science in voice with a minor in piano. Currently, I am working to complete a Master's of Music degree in vocal performance and choral conducting. I have performed in Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. I would be thrilled to start you or your student in their musical journey!
Teaching Style
My teaching style is generally laid back, but I am highly passionate to help my students achieve their goals.
I enjoy taking the time to get to know my students so that we can work hard and have fun together in our lessons. I find that if we are not having fun, then we have missed the most important aspect of why I love music.
Curriculum
Though I am comfortable teaching from a wide variety of books and materials, including many of my own, I strongly admire the Faber Method and nearly all of their work. I like to start with age appropriate books, but most often I use the Piano Adventures books. Once I feel the student has a confident basis of music knowledge, we can begin to add extra repertoire and expand on the variety of music we can learn. I am very passionate about strong musical literacy and technique, so I often provide materials to continue to increase the student's literacy and theory knowledge as well.
Depending on the student's prior musical knowledge we may begin with standardized lesson books and beginner piano knowledge or we may begin with repertoire immediately. I use a variety of tools to promote literacy, theory knowledge, technical proficiency, and musical knowledge through repertoire.
