About
I'm a professional pianist and piano teacher.
In my teaching career of over 25 years I have helped hundreds of students learn and improve their piano playing and musicianship.
I have taught students off all levels, both amateur and college students, some of whom have become professional musicians with outstanding careers.
I find great joy teaching and finding the best way to help students gain a better understanding of music and piano playing.
I have a Cum Laude degree in Jazz Piano from University of Miami and I have played professionally for more than 25 years.
I have taught since I was in college and I consider teaching music my main mission in life.
For the past 15 years I have taught Jazz Piano in the School of Music at Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá (Colombia)
I love to teach and the glow in the eyes or a student when he or she discovers something new in music, fills my heart.
Teaching Style
In my lessons I like to keep a relaxed but focused attitude.
I keep a record of every activity in the lessons so I can pick up from where we covered previously.
I like to find out from the student what his goals are and what motivates him the most, and try to help him achieve that through both a short term and a long term approach. The short term one will help him have a quick win (sense of accomplishment). The long term one helps to build the foundation for further wins.
I like to cover both the musical concepts of piano playing (broader vision of what we are doing) as well as the concrete tips and tricks that will help to play the particular piece we are working on. The balance between these 2 elements is crucial but I put more emphasis on either one depending on the student's level and style of learning.
Curriculum
I help adult piano students to learn and improve their skills in jazz and pop piano through a systematic and well organized approach to learning and practicing piano.
My teaching methods include clear communication with my students about their goals as well as the obstacles they're facing.
In a typical lesson I usually cover: 1) Technique, 2) Harmony, 3) Repertoire and 4) improvisation.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my willingness to try different ways to teach and approach a subject depending on the unique characteristics and ability of each student.
I can teach from beginner to advance students.
