About
I love teaching music and I love working with beginner students!
For the past 10 years, I've worked in public middle schools teaching band and orchestra for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. I've worked with ALL age groups, from elementary all the way up to adult! (If you're an adult and looking to learn an instrument that you've always wanted to try, you're in the right place!)
I earned my Bachelors of Music Education from Georgia Regents University (now called Augusta University). I hold a Professional Teaching Certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and I'm certified to teach band, orchestra, voice, piano, music history, music theory, music technology, and several other classes from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade.
At the start of my career, I was hired at Eagles Landing Middle School and built an orchestra program from the ground up during my first three years teaching. During that time, I also taught private lessons at my favorite music store, TLS Music in Stockbridge, Georgia.
In my fourth year of teaching, I taught both orchestra and band at Arnold Magnet Academy in Columbus, Georgia. For the next six years, I rebuilt the music programs into award-winning ensembles after the COVID-19 pandemic.
I look forward to working with you- private lessons can be really intimidating, but I promise we will have fun together!
Teaching Style
We learn best by DOING.
I like to help my students by modeling, connecting to prior knowledge, and building on a strong foundation. By learning small, manageable skills, I allow my students to break down challenging concepts into easy-to-master, do-able tasks!
Anyone can learn to play music. If you're ready to learn with me, you'll be DOING it in no time!
Curriculum
For band and orchestra students, I use a method book called Essential Elements. Be sure to get Book 1!
For piano students, I recommend Alfreds Basic Piano Library. Be sure to get the LESSON book, not one of their other series. (This can be confusing, because they have RECITAL books, THEORY books, and others as well.)
IMPORTANT: I recommend double checking with me before purchasing a book to avoid any confusion. Let's make sure you have the materials you need to find success!
