About

Hi, I'm Luke! I am a student at the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in music composition. I've played guitar for 9 years and have a competent understanding of music theory. I'd love to help foster the passion for music in new learning musicians.

Teaching Style

I use the tastes and preferences of the student to tailor their learning experience to their needs. I would encourage any student to find pieces they intend to learn and bring them to me so that we can work through it together, regardless of difficulty or availability of material. I believe this motivates the student to develop their skills out of curiosity and desire, not obligation.

Curriculum

Lessons will be in the form of video calls extending no more than an hour (half-hour sessions are viable, too) in which myself and the student analyze, practice, and/or improvise the facets of whatever piece we are undertaking.

Generally, I would recommend the guitar head book series for those who want a comprehensive understanding of how the instrument works as well as how it's been used and progressed as an instrument over time.

I would also recommend that students take on some music theiry content. It is not required by any means, but is a valuable tool that gives you a chance to see the inner machinations of music and better use the skills we cover.

Credentials & Affiliations

I have only given in-person, private lessons to fellow students or friends, free of charge. Usually this coincided with my studies at the University of Pittsburgh. I have performed cover music for the Bluegrass ensemble at Pitt as well as played my own music with the director of the music school, Roger Zahab. Despite my lack of teaching experience, I have more than enough knowledge and experience to help new musicians take their beginner or intermediate skills to the next level in a very personal, flexible manner.
