Abram Racin

Abram Racin is a New Orleans–based professional multi-instrumentalist whose work spans traditional jazz, swing, country, blues, and roots music. Raised in West Virginia, he developed a foundation in traditional music through his upbringing and learning experiences at the Augusta Heritage Center. His musical education also includes school-based instruction, private lessons, and extensive professional performance experience.

From 2020 to 2025, Racin led Abram Racin and the St Claude Strutters, maintaining a weekly residency at Favela Chic on Frenchmen Street. He has also performed with Ingrid Lucia’s band, sharing the stage on various occasions with Delfeayo Marsalis, Wes “Warmdaddy” Anderson, and musicians associated with Preservation Hall.

Between 2009 and 2011, Racin performed with Rising Appalachia, including appearances at FloydFest and LEAF Festival. He performs with Gal Holiday and has appeared with the band numerous times at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. His current engagements also include traditional jazz performances at Fritzel’s and aboard the City of New Orleans riverboat. His approach to music is grounded in ensemble experience, stylistic versatility, and a practical understanding of harmony and improvisation.

Abram takes a practical, down-to-earth approach to teaching, helping students understand musical concepts through songs, grooves, and examples they can hear and play. He introduces theory in plain language when it helps answer a question or makes something easier to understand, keeping lessons approachable and focused on making music.

Lessons are tailored to each student’s interests and goals, with an emphasis on timing, tone, phrasing, and playing confidently with others. Challenging ideas are broken into manageable steps, with clear guidance on how to practice and apply them.
