About
I'm a graduate student at Michigan State University with 13 years of saxophone experience and 5 years of teaching music. I'm excited to help you achieve your musical goals and look forward to working with you!
I’m a saxophonist and composer from the San Francisco Bay Area. I first picked up the saxophone at age 10 and started my music studies in middle school. Jazz quickly became my refuge, and I was inspired by musicians like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Jackie McLean. I later had the opportunity to perform with the SFJazz High School All Stars, playing at the Monterey Jazz Festival and touring in Brazil.
In more recent years, I’ve had the privilege of playing with amazing musicians like Marcus Shelby, Rodney Whitaker, Michael Dease, Randy Napoleon, and I’m currently part of a Detroit-based residency band called The Gathering, which is directed by Rodney Whitaker. I’ve performed at venues such as the Detroit Jazz Festival, Jazz on the Hill at College of San Mateo, the Blue Llama, and Cliff Bells, and I perform regularly around Michigan with different groups.
I’ve studied with some incredible musicians along the way, including Howard Wiley, Diego Rivera, Walter Blanding Jr., Kasey Knudsen, Randy Napoleon, Michael Dease, and Rodney Whitaker. Currently, I’m attending Michigan State University, working towards a Master’s degree in jazz studies. I’m also passionate about film and art, and I’ve gained experience in film scoring.
Throughout my time as a performing musician, I’ve been deeply interested in learning how to teach jazz and saxophone technique. My teaching approach is all about helping students find joy in practicing their instrument. I focus on what interests my students most and try to bring my own perspective on what’s worked for me in my studies. What you can expect from a lesson with me is a kind, focused approach that will help you grow as a musician while fostering a deep love for saxophone and music.
Teaching Style
My teaching style focuses on cultivating a love for music while emphasizing the essential fundamentals. In my lessons, we explore what inspires you to play music, and work on building the foundational skills necessary to achieve comfort and confidence while performing.
