Bassam Alkhalaf
About
I'm a vocal coach who teaches voice the way it should have been taught the first time, clearly, precisely, and grounded in evidence rather than vibes.
Radiant Voice Academy is my studio in Craigieburn, Melbourne, where I work with contemporary singers across pop, jazz, funk, rock, and metal, from complete beginners to professionals refining their craft. I also coach professional voice users: speakers, advocates, and presenters who need their voice to land in high-stakes rooms.
My pedagogy is built on three things: the anatomy of the larynx, the acoustics of vocal style, and the neurology of motor learning. Every technique I use is evidence-based. Every instruction has a reason behind it. If I cannot explain the why, it does not belong in your lesson.
Background:
- Bachelor of Music (Psychology), Victoria University
- VET Toolkit for Vocal Coaches, VocaLab
- Currently training in Estill Voice Training (EVT)
- 2.5+ years teaching voice, piano, and beginner guitar to 70+ students aged 9–60+
- 15+ years performing and recording on the Melbourne live scene
What I specialise in:
- Healthy contemporary technique, belt, mix, distortion, and stylistic versatility
- Systematic vocal warm-ups grounded in motor-learning research
- Performance psychology and managing high-stakes vocal anxiety
- Pedagogy for learners who think structurally and want the mechanics, not the metaphors
- Sensory-aware lesson design for neurodivergent students
What students leave with: expanded range, reliable tonal control, a personalised practice roadmap with weekly targets, adaptable technique across genres, and a teacher who actually explains what is happening inside their body when they sing.
Currently accepting new students. Studio in Craigieburn; online lessons Australia-wide.
Teaching Style
Direct, structured, and grounded in evidence. I teach voice the way it should have been taught the first time, clearly, precisely, and with full respect for how each student processes information.
If I cannot explain why an exercise works, it does not belong in your lesson. Every warm-up has a purpose. Every technique is grounded in vocal anatomy, acoustics, and motor-learning research. You will not hear "just feel it" from me.
My lessons are warm, structured, and free of pressure. I work especially well with students who think analytically, want the mechanics explained, have struggled with traditional teaching methods, or need a sensory-aware learning environment. Adults returning to singing after years away, neurodivergent learners, anxious performers, and stylistic specialists are all welcome here.
Curriculum
Lessons are structured in three phases: warm-up, technical work, and repertoire application. Each phase is built on motor-learning principles: short, focused reps, immediate feedback, and clear targets you can measure week to week.
Core curriculum areas:
- Healthy contemporary technique, belt, mix, distortion, breath management, and registration
- Stylistic versatility across pop, jazz, funk, rock, and metal
- Ear training, musicianship, and improvisation are integrated into vocal work
- Performance psychology and managing high-stakes vocal anxiety
- Personalised practice roadmaps with weekly targets
Recommended texts and resources:
- The Vocal Athlete (LeBorgne & Rosenberg, 3rd Edition, Plural Publishing, 2024) — for advanced students wanting the scientific underpinning
- Estill Voice Training materials (provided in the lesson where relevant)
- Style-specific repertoire selected per student in their first lessons, rather than a standardised text, contemporary voice teaching benefits more from curated repertoire than fixed methodology books
Students do not need to purchase texts to begin.
