About
I am a flutist who is currently performing all over in Cheyenne. I started working as the flute/piccolo professor at Laramie County Community College in 2022 as well as a General Music teacher for grades PK-6 with Laramie County School District 1. I love playing pit orchestra music with Cheyenne Little Theater and have been since 2015, doubling on clarinet and saxophone. I also play in local Community bands, jazz bands, and various church groups.
I started teaching private flute lessons in 1996 when I studied under Philip Dikeman. I went to Wayne Sate University and received a Bachelor's in performance and Music Education in 2003. During that time I studied under Ervin Monroe. In 2001, I went to a masterclass workshop at Julliard and studied with Jeannie Baxtresser. The summer of 2005 I attended Vandercook college of music in Chicago where is was able to perform with the college symphonic and jazz bands. I also studied with Dr. Jennifer Grim in 2007 at UNLV while working towards a masters in music.
I have been teaching private flute students for 30 years as well as woodwind ensembles. I worked with woodwind students attending the Saturday School of Music Program at Wayne State University from 2000-2005. I have conducted many band sectionals at local schools and given masterclasses at many schools. I am also the founder of the Cheyenne Flute Players flute choir (2024).
Teaching Style
There are 5 main areas to playing an instrument:
Tone, Technique, Articulation, Intonation, and Breath control.
I try to focus on 3 of these 5 things in a lesson. I do not believe in overwhelming the student with loads of information where they forget things that were taught in a lesson. My goal is for students to understand what was taught in a lesson and to be able to correctly practice the skills that were taught.
Curriculum
When teaching I use the Rubank method books and Trevor Wye. Www.Flutetunes.com is a great resource for solos and etudes. They also have flute articles, scales, fingering charts and so much more.
