Zachary B. Dornfeld
About
I am a music educator, performer, and composer with a Master’s Degree in Music from New York University (2021) and a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a minor in Music & Technology from Stony Brook University (2019), where I graduated Summa Cum Laude.
My training includes instrumental performance, composition, conducting, and music technology. I teach clarinet, piano, saxophone, voice, composition, music production, and conducting, and I work with students of many ages and experience levels from beginners to developing performers and composers.
My teaching experience includes work through MusicBreeds at Bellport Middle School, where I taught developing student musicians in a classroom setting. I have also served as music director and vocal director for productions with North Shore Village Theatre and Sunrise Theatre Company, helping students prepare music and performance material for live theater productions.
As a performer, I have played with ensembles including the Northwinds Symphonic Band, Huntington Community Band, Stony Brook University Orchestra, Stony Brook Live! Jazz Band, and NYU Concert Band. These experiences help me tailor lessons to each student’s individual goals, whether improving technique, preparing auditions or performances, building musicianship, exploring composition, or developing confidence as a musician.
My teaching approach is supportive, flexible, and student-centered, with an emphasis on long-term musical growth, creativity, and building confidence through music.
Teaching Style
I believe lessons work best when they balance structure with creativity. I adapt each lesson to the student’s needs while encouraging steady growth, confidence, and enjoyment in music-making.
Curriculum
Lessons are designed around each student’s individual goals, whether they are developing instrumental technique, strengthening musicianship, preparing for performance, or exploring creative work. Instrumental and vocal lessons may include tone production, technical exercises, sight reading, ear training, repertoire, and musical interpretation. Composition and music technology lessons can include guided writing, notation, listening, analysis, and project-based creative work, with material adjusted to the student’s level and interests.
