Cornel G Schenk
About
Cornel Schenk is a multi-instrumentalist holding Licentiates in Piano, Harp, and Flute, and has over 40 years of experience as an international performer and educator. I bring a lifetime of musical heritage to every lesson. Growing up in a family-owned music store in South Africa, I began learning to play piano at the age of 3, and started teaching piano at the age of 15. I also started learning harp at the age of 10 and flute at the age of 13. I'm passionate about sharing the joy of these instruments with students in the United States and beyond.
My Background
My musical foundation is rooted in rigorous classical training. I graduated from Technikon Pretoria in 1994 - 1997 with a Diploma in Performing Arts and had the privilege of studying under world-class masters, including:
-
Piano: Professors Zydell and Ludwig.
-
Harp: Jelouna de Vos, Principal Harpist of the South African Symphony Orchestra.
-
Flute: Specialized training at the Pro Arte High School.
Beyond the classical world, my career as a professional artist has allowed me to collaborate with elite musicians across Jazz, Rock, Pop, and Fusion. This versatility allows me to help students explore the genres they love while maintaining a high standard of technical excellence.
I have performed at live classical piano concerts, weddings, receptions, church events, live harp and flute concerts, Christmas events, corporate events over the years since 1980.

Teaching Style
I believe that a strong foundation is the key to lifelong musical enjoyment. Whether you are sitting down at the piano for the first time, picking up the flute, or discovering the magic of the harp, my goal is to create a supportive and inspiring environment.
-
Specialization in Beginners & Intermediates: I love the "light bulb moments" that happen in the early stages of learning. I break down complex techniques into manageable, encouraging steps.
-
Tailored Instruction: No two students are the same. I adapt my methods to fit your age, goals, and learning style—from elementary students to adults.
-
Comprehensive Musicianship: Because I am trained in three instruments and multiple genres, I teach my students to see the "big picture" of music, including theory, performance confidence, and expressive storytelling.
Whether you are looking to master a classical piece or simply want to play your favorite songs for fun, I am dedicated to helping you find your unique voice through music.
I offer a brief introductory session to discuss goals and ensure we're a good fit.
Curriculum
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student learns differently. I do not subscribe to a "one-size-fits-all" curriculum; instead, I draw from my extensive 40-year background to create a bespoke learning path for every individual.
My method is a hybrid of the South African Classical Tradition and modern pedagogy. I grew up within the rigorous South African examination system, progressing through eight levels of intensive performance and music theory. This background instilled in me a deep respect for technical precision, sight-reading, and the "building blocks" of music.
In my lessons, I prioritize:
-
Strategic Personalization: I research and select materials only after meeting the student to assess their hand size, learning style, and musical interests.
-
Technical Excellence: We build a strong classical foundation that allows the student to eventually play any genre, from Jazz to Pop.
-
Holistic Musicianship: Theory is never an afterthought—it is integrated into our repertoire so students understand the "why" behind the notes.
-
Progressive Goal Setting: Whether preparing for an audition or playing for personal enrichment, I provide clear milestones to ensure consistent growth.
