Zicoriah Chevy Dumo Hernandez
About
Originally from Fort Lauderdale Florida, Zico Chevy Hernandez hails from a long line of artists and musicians. His Father, a percussionist from Cuba, used to play percussive beats on his mother’s womb, inciting Zico to tap back. Throughout Zico’s life, Zico has studied a collection of musical instruments and genres, with a primary focus on percussion and guitar. Zico has had many teachers and has been professionally teaching music since 2019.
Growing up, Zico has had the pleasure of playing at an array of venues including churches, bars, and blues clubs. Some early notable projects include playing percussion for a Santana tribute band, sitting in on blues sets with Joey Gilmore, and playing guitar for the local church. Zico’s early life was filled with dance, music, and art.
Though Zico’s early life was primarily a latin/blues focus, his teen years were immersed in 90’s grunge, alternative music, and classic rock. From 2014-2018 he was a drummer for She’s Gay We're Not, Sorry Dad, Thrunk!, and The Badass Enrique Project. Zico has played at the Vera project, Coolridge Vineyard, and various local punk shows. During this time Zico also took composition and percussion lessons with Adrian Young, a drummer for a Seattle based electronica band called Gems. As well as experimented with song writing and singing on the guitar.
Since 2019, Zico has been teaching and refining his knowledge on music theory, musical communication, and technical practice. He has taught students ages 3-60, all across Washington state, focusing on grounding students on a foundation of intuitive creative playing, then growing them into a passion for music history and theory. In the course of this time, Zico studied music theory and vocals with jazz singer Marly Mitchell, played drums for The Confidants, and developed a prototype for an app called Fish, a simulated guitar battle game. Zico values a teaching space that provides the student confidence in their authentic voice. Zico believes that musical knowledge is learned to be able to share one’s self expression, rather than to simplify and divide musicians.
Zico teaches beginner to intermediate levels of Percussion, Guitar, Bass, Vocals, Piano and Music Theory. In his off time he enjoys gardening, mix median art, boxing, and playing fetch with his dog. Zico is sure to be enchanted to meet you.
Teaching Style
Zico likes to first build a well rounded foundation on technique, vocabulary, and improvisation. Then sets a student's goals based on their personal goals whether it be creation, exploration, theory, or learning composition.
