Chad McMath
About
I am a lifelong musician providing trumpet and guitar lessons to beginner and intermediate students—adult learners welcome!
I played trumpet throughout middle school and high school as first chair, taking private lessons for much of that time. As an adult, I have played in the Chapel Orchestra for Southern Seminary (where I earned both master's and doctorate degrees in ministry). Additionally, I've played in various ensembles and regulalry at churches and nursing homes. I taught trumpet lessons for two years at Mrs. B's Music and Art Academy, through which I also directed the Sallisaw Area Youth Choir. I am currently taking a deep dive into jazz!
I am a self-taught guitar player of nearly 30 years. I began leading worship for my church youth group at the age of 14 and have led consistently in numerous churches ever since. I taught guitar lessons for a combined 2.5 years at Mrs. B's Music and Art Academy and at Guitar Center. I can teach rhythm guitar, finger picking, basic tablature, and scales/lead. My teaching is best suited for acoustic guitar but will work for electric as well.
Teaching Style
I am a patient and tentative teacher, which I attribute in part to parenting three children! I seek to taylor my lessons to capitalize on my students' strengths and improve their weaknesses, providing real encouragement while also giving honest and helpful asessements of their playing. I like to have some structure as a backbone to my lessons (with a clear path laid ahead) but will take excursions as needed.
Curriculum
For trumpet, I like to use Essential Elements for Band (Bb Trumpet, Books 1 & 2). For more advanced students, I can provided various resources digitally.
For guitar, I can provide chord sheets and other resources digitally (both written and audio).
