Katrina Phillips
About
I am a clarinet professor at a university in the United States and have been for 17 years. I enjoy seeing progress that my students make from year to year at Alabama State University and from the beginning to the end of their degree. I also enjoy working with younger students including beginners.
I have performed with regional orchestras in Alabama and Florida and have played as a soloist on Black Dog by Scott McAllister with Capitol Sounds Concert Band in Montgomery. I've played at the Shakespeare Theater in musicals such as Annie and Cabaret. I also play in many local church performances.
Teaching Style
I value the importance of strong fundamentals of playing and emphasize them with young students and revisit them with older players when needed.
I listen to the student and provide feedback and listen again in hopes that the student understands the concept. I rely on my solid background from the University of Illinois where I obtained both my Doctoral Degree in Clarinet Performance and a Minor in Musicology and my Masters degree where I studied with J. David Harris and my undergraduate at the University of Colorado at Boulder where I studied with Daniel Silver.
I also provide modeling on my own clarinet a lot in lessons. I like for the student to be able to hear how the melody is supposed to sound not just to copy it but to pick up on details of nuance and phrasing that are often difficult to communicate through words.
Curriculum
Beginner: Rubank Elementary Method for Clarinet or any band method they are using at school such as Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence
Intermediate: Melodious and Progressive Studies by David Hite Vol 1
Advanced: Rubank Advanced Method Vol. 1
I would like to hear the student and assess their playing before assigning the book.
