About
I am a music educator, pianist trained in classical and jazz, accompanist, conductor, film composer, arranger, and music director with over 20 years of teaching and performane experience. I hold a Master of Music in Music Education from Temple University and a Bachelor of Music in Commercial and Media Composition from California State University, Northridge. My experience includes teaching at Temple University's Preparatory Division, directing school and church music programs, composing music for independent films, arranging broadcast theme music, and performing as an accompanist and pianist.
I teach students of all ages and skill levels in piano, many other instruments, music theory, ear training, sight singing, songwriting, composition, improvisation, and accompaniment.
What makes my teaching unique is my focus on practical musicianship. In addition to reading music, I help students develop the ability to play by ear, understand harmony, accompany others, improvise, compose, and communicate through music. My goal is to help students become confident, well-rounded musicians who enjoy making music for a lifetime.
Teaching Style
I believe music is a beautiful language. Just as we learn language through listening, speaking, and understanding, musicians should hear, create, and communicate through music not simply read notes on a page.
While reading music is an important skill, it is only one part of becoming a complete musician. My goal is to help students develop a complete understanding of music through ear training, theory, improvisation, accompaniment, and practical musicianship. I want students to understand why music works, not just how to play the correct notes.
Throughout my years as an accompanist, conductor, songwriter, arranger, and educator, I have learned that talent is often overrated. The students who make the greatest progress are usually no the most naturally gifted; they are the ones who practice consistently and develop strong habits.
I believe successful music education is a partnership between teacher, student, and family. Lessons provide guidance, but growth happens between lessons. When student establish regular practice routines, they gain confidence, make faster progress, and enjoy music more.
As a teacher, I combine encouragement with high expectations. I share my own struggles and experiences so students understand that mistakes and frustration are a part of learning although I try to make learning as fun as possible whenever I can. My goal is to develop lifelong music lovers and well-rounded musicians who can ply by ear, understand chords, improvise, accompany others, and continue making music long after lessons have ended.
