About

I am a BA Music student at the University of York, where I am currently working towards my Diploma in Violin and Grade 8 in Piano. I have had experience with one - to - one tuiton, as well as group tuition. I have taught a wide range of ages from 3 years old to adults and am very adaptable fit each students needs and abilities.

I have taken an Instrumental Music Education module as part of my course, as I have a strong passion for being able to share music with others! I am a part of the University Music Education Group (Meg) where I am a Workshop Practitioner, meaning I volunteer to lead and attend musical workshops and lessons with care homes, local musical groups, primary schools etc.

I also currently work with the York Music Centre, where I am an Early Years Leader for their First Steps group. This is where I run musical lessons and workshops with a group of 3 - 6 year olds and have fun exploring a range of different instruments with them.

I am enhanced DBS checked.

Teaching Style

I am very adaptable and flexible in my teaching! I teach Violin, Piano and Music Theory to all ages from children to adults and teach a wide range of genres from classcial to pop with many inbetween. I go with a student led approach to learning, meaning I base the lessons upon what it is the student wants to learn or achieve. For example, some students prefer ABRSM exam routes, some prefer top just learn the basics, some prefer to learn for fun, it is entirely up to you!

My core values as an instrumental teacher are creativty, patience and motivation. I believe it is important to encourage students to be independent in their learning so that they can develop their own creative ideas and truly understand music. This is achieved through patience with my students, letting them learn and explore the instrument at their own pace, while also gently pushing them out of their comfort zone to develop as a musician. I ensure the lessons are fun, useful and engaging to ensure the student feels confident and is enjoying the experience of their learning, to make sure thry stay motivated, a key element to learning music!

I aim to develop a range of skills with the student such as notation reading and aural skills, alongside skills such as improvisation if the student wishes, and many more. These are achieved through demomstrations, explanations and many practical activities! I am always aiming to develop my teaching skills, so am eager to try new things, step outside of my comfort zone and be creative!

Curriculum

This can vary depending on the routes and approaches students wish to go down with their lessons, but I often use the Piano Time books by Pauline Hall for Piano students, alongside the ABRSM exam books if the student is interested in exams. For violin students I tend to use the Fiddle Time books by Kathy and David Blackwell, as well as the ABRSM books. For Music Theory I often use the ABRSM workbooks. These are just examples, I use a wide variety of others and am happy to try out other texts that I have not explored before should the student wish!
