The best online music lessons shouldn’t feel like watching a video, they should feel like making music together.
That’s the philosophy behind every lesson I teach. During the shift to online learning in 2020, I dedicated myself to developing an interactive teaching experience that goes far beyond a typical video call. By combining professional online teaching tools, notation software, screen sharing, backing tracks, and personalized lesson materials, I’ve created lessons that are engaging, collaborative, and remarkably close to learning side-by-side in person.
With 20 years of teaching experience, I’m also an active professional guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter based in Los Angeles. I perform with rock bands and cover bands throughout Southern California while also working as a solo singer-guitarist for corporate and private events. Career highlights include performing guitar for the National Anthem at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and performances for Universal Studios, City of Hope, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. I’ve also recorded in several professional Los Angeles studios and released original music on Spotify.
Whether you’re picking up your first guitar, learning bass or ukulele, preparing for live performances, or writing your own songs, my goal is to help you make consistent progress while keeping every lesson fun, encouraging, and tailored to your musical goals.
Teaching Style
I believe people learn best when they feel comfortable, encouraged, and genuinely excited to play. My first goal is to create a positive connection with each student so they feel relaxed, confident, and eager to learn. Music is a creative art, and creativity thrives in an environment where it’s okay to experiment, ask questions, and make mistakes.
Rather than focusing on perfection, I focus on progress. Mistakes aren’t failures, they’re an essential part of learning. Lessons are a safe place to explore new ideas, build confidence, and develop skills so that when it’s time to perform or play with others, students feel prepared and self-assured.
Every lesson is personalized to the student’s goals, whether that’s learning favorite songs, improving technique, understanding music theory, writing original music, or preparing for performances. I balance encouragement with honest, constructive feedback, celebrating every milestone while providing the guidance needed to keep students growing.
Most importantly, I want my students to look forward to every lesson. When learning is engaging, challenging, and fun, progress comes naturally and that’s the kind of environment I strive to create every week.
Curriculum
My teaching method begins with a simple question: Why do you want to play music?
Every student has a different answer. Some want to play their favorite songs, some dream of performing on stage, some want to write original music, and others simply want a creative outlet. Once we understand your goals, we can build a personalized path that helps you get there.
From there, we focus on the most important instrument of all: you. Every student has different hands, different strengths, and a unique way of learning. We’ll develop efficient technique, improve posture and mechanics, and use targeted exercises to build the coordination that allows your musical ideas to flow naturally.
Finally, we apply those skills to music that inspires you. I believe students make the fastest progress when they’re learning songs they genuinely love. If a song is beyond your current level, I won’t tell you to wait. Instead, I’ll create a simplified version that lets you start playing it right away. As your skills improve, we’ll gradually build toward the complete arrangement, one step at a time. My goal is to meet you where you are while always keeping your musical goals in sight.
Two books have had a profound influence on my philosophy as both a musician and teacher. While they aren’t traditional method books, I highly recommend The Music Lesson by Victor Wooten and The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. Both explore the mindset behind creativity, expression, and lifelong musical growth, which are qualities I strive to cultivate in every lesson.
