Oliver-Kei Vonlanthen
About
Hello everyone!
I'm Oliver. I've been playing the guitar for 17 years and teaching for 10. Music is a great passion of mine and I'd love to explore this special world with you!
A bit about myself: I am a graduate of WAAPA (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts) having studied Jazz Guitar for four years under the mentorship of some world-class musicians. Prior to that, my musical foundations began with classical guitar from the age of 11, which developed naturally into other acoustic finger-picking styles and finally into the worlds of rock, blues, and jazz.
Besides working as a performer and teacher on land, I've worked for two years as a guitarist in the showband on Silversea Cruises, in which I played productions, guest entertainer shows, and jazz sets every day.
Teaching Style
I believe that every teacher, just as every student, has their own style of learning and it is a good teacher's responsibility to make this process as natural and comfortable as possible.
Depending on the student's ability level and personal goals, I adapt my lessons to cater to their specific needs in achieving these goals. We will work on pieces by breaking them down to find focus areas to practice before re-integrating it into the performance of the whole piece. Besides songs, we will learn about building the foundations for your goals: both genre-specific and general. We're talking scales, chords, technique, aural perceptivity and fretboard familiarity.
In a nutshell, my goal is to help you close the gap between what you hear and what you play.
Most importantly, having fun learning and getting better is central to everything! I'll do my best to make it as enjoyable an experience as possible for you.
