Robin Dupuy

I'm a French cellist, composer, and sound artist based in Japan, where I perform solo cello with live looping and electronics. My playing lives in the world of pop, film, and improvisation — I don't teach from the classical repertoire or method tradition. 

Instead, I focus on helping players find their own voice on the cello: improvising over pop songs, film themes, and anime/video game music, and building loop-based arrangements live.

I trained classically at the Schola Cantorum in Paris and have over 20 years of performance experience, including collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Joe Hisaishi, and Koji Tamaki, but my teaching is rooted in a completely different world — pop, improvisation, and live performance craft.

Lessons are built around improvisation, not classical repertoire.

If you want to learn how to play over a chord progression, reimagine a pop song, or find your own melodic ideas on the cello, that's where we spend our time — not reading fixed sheet music note-for-note. We work by ear and by feel: listening, reacting, and building musical vocabulary you can use in any context.

I love exploring live looping and electronics, building a full arrangement out of nothing but a cello and a loop pedal. For students interested in the professional side, I also teach what it actually takes to succeed as a live and studio musician — from stage setup to session work to building a sustainable career. I work with intermediate to advanced players only, in English, French, or Japanese.
