Erik DeMario

I am a professional tenor and voice teacher with a Master of Music in Voice and Opera from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music and bachelor's degrees in Theatre and Philosophy from Virginia Commonwealth University. I maintain an active performing career with opera companies and arts organizations around the country, and I love bringing the experience of working as a professional singer directly into my teaching.

My approach to teaching begins with a simple goal: helping each student develop a healthy, efficient, and confident voice that feels like their own. I believe strong vocal technique should give singers greater freedom and expression rather than make singing feel overly complicated or mechanical.

Lessons are tailored to the individual singer. We may work on breath coordination, resonance, registration, range, vocal freedom, diction, musicality, interpretation, or performance skills depending on the student's needs and goals. I also enjoy helping singers prepare repertoire for auditions, performances, college auditions, and other opportunities.

My primary background is in classical voice and opera, but my training in both music and theatre gives me a strong interest in the connection between vocal technique, text, character, and communication. I work with students interested in classical singing, opera, musical theatre, and developing a stronger overall vocal technique.

Because I continue to perform professionally, I understand firsthand the challenges singers encounter in auditions, rehearsals, performances, and the practice room. I aim to create a supportive and encouraging environment where students can experiment, ask questions, make mistakes, and develop greater confidence in their abilities.
