Jennifer Byron
About
Hi! I'm Jenn! I am a bilingual vocal coach, music educator, and professional vocalist with more than 15 years of performance experience and over a decade of teaching experience. I hold a B.A. in Contemporary Music from Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), where I graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2012, as well as a Certification in Music Therapy from CRM Musicoterapia (2021). I am currently pursuing a B.A. in Psychology at Universidad de las Américas (UDLA). My academic and professional background allows me to combine vocal technique and musicianship with an individualized approach that helps students develop confidence, artistic expression, and a deeper understanding of their instrument.
From 2012 to 2021, I served as a Music Professor at Universidad de las Américas (UDLA) in Quito, Ecuador, where I taught university-level courses in contemporary music theory, music history, vocal performance, and performance studies, with an emphasis on pop, rock, jazz, and contemporary styles. I designed curricula and lesson plans, directed student ensembles and performances, and coached students in technique, interpretation, stage presence, musicianship, and ensemble performance. Since 2012, I have also worked as a private vocal coach and music instructor, teaching beginner through advanced students both in person and online, in English and Spanish. My lessons integrate breathing and vocal coordination, vocal technique, ear training, repertoire, interpretation, stylistic development, and performance coaching.
Alongside my teaching career, I have worked professionally as a vocalist since 2007, performing with bands, in concerts, musical theatre productions, corporate and private events, and live-music venues. My international experience includes serving as lead vocalist for La Malamaña's European Tour in 2020. My performance projects have also included Jennifer Byron & The Phunky Butt Rhythm and Blues Band and La Banda del Flashback, with whom I opened for Supertramp in 2013 and performed at an event for Ronaldinho in 2020.
My professional experience also includes working as a lead vocalist aboard Royal Caribbean International's Adventure of the Seas in 2026, performing with a live party band for international audiences. This role required me to maintain an extensive repertoire across multiple genres, perform several sets regularly, collaborate with musicians from different professional and cultural backgrounds, and adapt to a wide variety of audiences and performance environments. This experience has been particularly valuable to my work as a vocal coach, allowing me to teach from the perspective of a working singer and to help students develop not only vocal technique, but also versatility, stamina, musicianship, stage presence, and the practical skills required for professional live performance.
My musical theatre credits include Forever Young (2018), Hasta la Vuelta Señor (2019), and Jesucristo Superestrella (2022). My professional collaboration experience also includes performing live background vocals for Alberto Plaza, Jerry Rivera, and Eric Martin of Mr. Big. Together, these experiences as an educator and working professional vocalist shape my approach to teaching: my goal is not only to help students develop healthy, reliable vocal technique, but also to deepen their understanding of musical style, interpretation, ear training, and performance so they can become confident, versatile, and expressive singers.
Teaching Style
Every voice is different, and I believe vocal training should reflect that. My approach is personalized, practical, and goal-oriented, adapting each lesson to the student’s voice, experience, musical interests, and objectives.
Our first lesson serves as a vocal and musical assessment. Through exercises and repertoire, I get to know your voice, identify your strengths and areas for development, and understand what you would like to achieve. From there, we create a personalized training plan with clear goals that we can evaluate and adjust as you progress.
Lessons generally combine three areas: vocal preparation, technique, and repertoire/performance. We begin with breathing, coordination, and warm-up exercises, followed by technical work based on what your voice specifically needs. Depending on the student, this may include pitch and ear training, range and register transitions, resonance and projection, flexibility and agility, vocal strength, rhythm, and phrasing. We then apply these skills directly to repertoire, working on interpretation, stylistic choices, expression, and performance.
I believe technique is most useful when students understand why and how it works and can apply it independently. For this reason, I provide exercises and supporting resources—including videos, PDFs, articles, and other learning materials—to encourage effective practice between lessons. Students also receive access to my growing library of online mini-courses to complement their individual training.
Progress is a partnership. Some skills may develop quickly while others require more time and repetition, and consistent practice between lessons plays an important role in that process. My goal is not to make your voice sound like someone else’s, but to help you understand how your own voice works, expand its possibilities, and give you the tools to make informed artistic and technical choices with confidence.
Curriculum
My teaching method combines vocal technique, ear training, musicianship, and repertoire-based learning. Rather than following a single standardized method, I adapt the training process to each student’s voice, level, musical background, and goals.
Lessons typically progress from breathing and vocal coordination to targeted technical exercises and, finally, practical application through repertoire. Technical work may focus on pitch, register transitions, resonance, range, flexibility, agility, rhythm, phrasing, and vocal stamina. Songs are an essential part of the learning process and are used to apply technique in a musical context while developing interpretation, stylistic awareness, and performance skills.
I place particular emphasis on learning through listening and application. Depending on the student’s goals, we may use ear-training exercises, transcription, rhythmic and melodic imitation, stylistic analysis, and recordings of established artists to understand how different vocal and musical choices function in practice.
Rather than requiring one specific textbook, I select and develop materials according to each student’s needs. These may include vocal exercises, lead sheets and sheet music, repertoire, recordings, ear-training materials, PDFs, articles, videos, and original educational resources that I provide throughout the course of study. When appropriate, I also recommend additional texts and resources based on the student’s level and areas of interest.
