About
Hi! I’m Huanyi, a professional trumpet player and teacher with over seven years of teaching experience. I currently serve as a Trumpet Teaching Assistant at the University of Colorado Boulder, where I am pursuing my Doctor of Musical Arts degree.
I studied at The Juilliard School and the University of Michigan and have performed professionally in symphony orchestras, including principal and associate principal trumpet positions.
I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels, from young beginners to advanced and college-level players. Whether you are just starting trumpet, preparing for an audition, or simply want to become a more confident and musical player, I’d love to help you reach your goals and enjoy the process!
Teaching Style
Every student learns differently, so I adapt my teaching to each student’s age, level, personality, and goals.
My lessons are friendly, encouraging, and goal-oriented. We work on sound, breathing, articulation, flexibility, range, endurance, technique, and most importantly, making music.
For beginners, I focus on making lessons enjoyable while building strong fundamentals. For advanced students, I draw from my professional orchestral experience to work on solo repertoire, orchestral excerpts, auditions, competitions, and performance preparation.
I also want students to understand why something works, so they can gradually become independent and confident musicians.
Curriculum
I select materials based on each student’s age, level, and goals rather than using one method for everyone.
I regularly use Arban, Clarke, Schlossberg, Bai Lin, Charlier, Brandt, and other standard trumpet methods and repertoire. Lessons may also include orchestral excerpts, solo literature, etudes, listening, and customized exercises.
Beginners focus on sound, rhythm, breathing, articulation, and healthy playing habits. More advanced students can work on technique, repertoire, orchestral playing, auditions, and performance skills. Students are also welcome to bring music from school, youth orchestra, college ensembles, or other projects!
