Ilirian Patricio Ahmeti
About
I’m Ilirian Patricio Ahmeti, a Vienna-born jazz pianist and composer. I began studying classical piano at the age of five and discovered jazz during my teenage years.
I later studied for several years with American pianist Danny Grissett in Vienna while completing my Bachelor of Arts in Music. In 2023, I also spent time at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I studied with pianists Tim Ray and Josh Rosen.
Over the following years, I became active in the Austrian, Slovakian, and Kosovar jazz scenes, performing and collaborating with musicians including Radovan Tariška, Joris Dudli, Maja Jaku, Sheki Hoxha, and Armend Xhaferi. I have performed at venues and festivals including Porgy & Bess in Vienna, Prishtina Jazz Festival, Mitrovica International Jazz Days, and Orava Jazz Festival, as well as at numerous concerts and projects across Austria, Slovakia, and Kosovo.
As a bandleader, I lead the Ilirian Patricio Ahmeti Trio, performing my own compositions alongside music from the jazz repertoire. My experience as both a performer and lifelong student of jazz strongly shapes the way I teach, with an emphasis on listening, improvisation, interaction, and developing an individual musical voice.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is centered around helping students become more confident and complete jazz musicians while gradually developing their own individual voice at the piano. A strong emphasis is placed on listening, stylistic understanding, harmonic fluency, and understanding the language behind the music rather than simply learning what notes to play.
I approach each student individually rather than following one fixed method. Lessons are adapted to your musical background, strengths, interests, and goals. The aim is not simply to learn more scales or collect licks, but to build a strong jazz vocabulary, develop your ears, and gain the musical confidence needed to express yourself naturally within the jazz language.
As an active professional jazz pianist, I also bring my own experience from performing and working with other musicians directly into the lessons, with particular emphasis on applying what we study to real musical and performance situations.
Curriculum
My lessons are designed primarily for intermediate to advanced pianists who want to deepen their understanding of jazz. We work on voicings, improvisation, comping, transcription, repertoire, harmonic understanding, and performance.
Much of the material is approached through actual music. We work with the Great American Songbook and the broader jazz repertoire according to the student’s interests and goals, using standards and recordings as a basis for studying harmony, phrasing, vocabulary, improvisation, and comping.
Transcription and listening are an important part of my teaching method, as I believe that developing an understanding of the jazz language comes from studying the music itself and learning how great musicians phrase, improvise, accompany, and interact.
I do not rely on one fixed textbook or method book. Materials and exercises are chosen according to the individual student and may include lead sheets, recordings, transcriptions, harmonic exercises, repertoire, and personalized practice material.
