Hans Verhoeven
About
I have been playing drums professionally since 1995.
I have performed and recorded with Phil Dwyer, Brad Turner, Don Thompson, PJ Perry, Oscar Stagnaro, Michael Blake, Hugh Fraser, Christine Jensen, Ingrid Jensen, Dee Daniels, Miss Emily, Rafael Zaldiver, and a whole lot more - a who's who of internationally acclaimed musicians.
I have a Master's degree in Orchestral Percussion Performance from the University of Victoria, where I studied with William Linwood, and a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Drums Performance from McGill University, where I studied with Chris McCann.
I have 12+ years teaching experience at the university level (Vancouver Island University - Bachelor of Jazz Studies program), and I have been teaching drum students for over 20 years.
In 2017 I was awarded a grant by Art Starts BC to teach a course on improvising at Kwalikum Secondary Jazz Academy. In 2015 I was given a professional development grant by the Nanaimo Arts Council, and I was awarded Outstanding Combo Drummer of the Year by the Zildjian Cymbal Company at Music Fest Canada in 2000. I remain an Associate Artist with Zildjian Cymbals to this day.

Teaching Style
My teaching style is open minded, creative, practical, and to-the-point.
I constantly look for ways to unlock potential, understanding, and ability.
I believe that nearly all percussion and drumming techniques are essenitally integrated, and I strive to find the points where different musical styles, goals, and concepts connect. If we can find those points where the different elements of drumming and music connect and interact, we unlock the ability to practice, and improve, in multiple areas simultaneously. This has been a major key to success with my students.
Curriculum
I customize my teaching method to the learning styles and interests of each of my students. While I am aware of and fluent in different methodologies, I don't believe on a dogmatic approach; some methods are useful in certain contexts, some are not. The key is to develop the awareness and wisdom to know when to use a certain approach.
