Mike Shapiro
About
HI! Mike Shapiro here. I have a B.M. from The Juilliard School with over 25 years teaching and performing at a high level. I started playing drums when I was 8 years old studying with Charles Perry. Between Charlie and The Juilliard School I had the pleasure of studying with Gil Breines, Morris Lang and Michael Carvin. At Juilliard I studied with Roland Kohloff, Saul Goodman and Buster Bailey. At Juilliard we played and were mentored by some of the finest musicians in the world.
During and after school I started teaching and performing professionally. Some of the artists I worked with are Todd Rundgren, Richard Julian, Marcellus Hall, Genya Raven, 50 Shades The Musical Comedy, Forever Dusty, the musical about Dusty Springfield, Wynton Marsalis and Pierre Boulez.
All this time I was developing my teaching approach. Taking lots of info from my teachers and adding in my own experience.
I learned to listen and identify what each students needs are and give them exercises and or songs to help develop their playing. Support and patience is a big part teaching.
I hope to hear from you.
Teaching Style
I have an overall approach, but I teach each student slightly differently depending on their strengths and weaknesses. Listening to my students and patience are key elements of my teaching style.
